In 2010, the world held its breath as thirty-three miners in Chile were trapped nearly half a mile underground after a cave-in. For 69 days, they waited in total darkness and intense heat, with no guarantee of survival.
But what’s incredible is what happened while they waited.
They prayed. They held worship services. They encouraged one another to hold on. Even in total isolation, they believed they weren’t alone.
When rescue teams finally broke through, it was nothing short of miraculous. All thirty-three were brought safely to the surface. Their story became a global symbol of perseverance and hope—and a reminder that no situation is too dark for God to reach.
Welcome to Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. I’m Bart Leger. If you’re facing a situation today that leaves you in a dark place—this devotion is for you.
2 Corinthians 1:8–10 (NLT) says:
“We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it. In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God, who raises the dead. And He did rescue us… and He will rescue us again.”
Paul’s words here aren’t sugarcoated. He says, “We expected to die.” It doesn’t get much more hopeless than that.
But right there—in the pit of despair—something changed. Paul didn’t just cry out; he let go of self-reliance and grabbed onto a God who raises the dead.
That’s the kind of God we worship.
The same God who reached Paul in his despair…
The same God who was present in that Chilean mine shaft…
…is the same God who’s with you in whatever you’re facing.
You may feel stuck, buried, or forgotten—but He knows exactly where you are. And He’s not done writing your story.
Sometimes, God allows us to be in places where we’re completely dependent on Him—so He can show us what only He can do.
So if you’re waiting on rescue today—don’t lose heart. Keep praying. Keep trusting. Keep holding on.
The God who lifts people out of pits—both literal and spiritual—still rescues today.
“Lord, when I feel buried by fear, pain, or circumstances I can’t control, remind me that You are near. I trust You to bring light into dark places. You’ve rescued before—and You will rescue again. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
If today’s devotion gave you hope, share it with someone who might feel stuck in a hopeless place.
I believe most of us know someone who needs to hear that God still rescues.
Thanks for joining me today on Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. Remember—when you feel buried, God is already planning the rescue. Come back next time for more encouragement to help you live grounded in God’s truth. Till then, God bless, and have a great day!
