A child’s smile can be more than just a sweet moment; it can be a reminder that God is near. Today we’ll see how even life’s smallest joys point us back to the Giver of every good and perfect gift.

Have you ever stopped to wonder if that small moment of joy was more than just coincidence?

Sometimes God’s goodness shows up in the quietest ways—a laugh, a sunrise, or even a smile. In today’s episode, we’ll look at how noticing those simple joys can remind us of God’s steady presence and generosity.

Main Scripture:

James 1:17 – “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.”

What you’ll learn in this episode:

  • Why small joys—like a child’s smile—are more than random moments
  • How to train your heart to notice God’s gifts in the middle of busy days
  • A practical reminder to let gratitude turn ordinary life into worship

Key takeaway:

Every good gift in your life—big or small—is a reminder of God’s love and faithfulness. Don’t rush past them; pause, notice, and give thanks.

00:00:01.002 --> 00:00:32.063
An Australian mom and dad are sitting in a small clinic room with their 7-week-old son, Lachlan. Tiny hearing aids are fitted behind those even tinier ears. He looks a little fussy. New sounds, new sensations, and... Mom leans in and whispers, "Hi Lachlan!" For a breath or two, nothing. Then, right there on camera, something changes in his eyes and you're just waiting to see what happens next.

Welcome to Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. I'm Bart Leger, and in just a few minutes together, we're going to steady our hearts with the truth from God's Word.

00:00:42.770 --> 00:00:56.590
Today's devotion is about how the little joys in life, like a smile, aren't random. There are reminders that God is present and giving good gifts. Our verse

00:00:56.590 --> 00:01:36.003
17. "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning." Think about the last time something small but joyful interrupted your day. Maybe a child's laugh or a bird singing outside your window. Maybe it was the smell of fresh coffee brewing in the kitchen. Those moments might seem insignificant, but do not end. and he often shows his love to us in small, ordinary moments that we can easily miss if we're not paying attention. Think about the last time something small but joyful interrupted your day. Maybe it was a child's laugh, or a bird singing outside your window.

00:01:31.082 --> 00:01:41.623
Maybe it was the smell of fresh coffee brewing in the kitchen.

00:01:36.003 --> 00:02:05.822
Those moments might seem but James says, every good gift comes from above. That means nothing good is wasted. God is generous in how he reminds us he's near. A child's smile can soften a weary heart. A word of encouragement from a friend can shift your whole outlook. Even the smallest blessings can be his way of saying, I see you.

00:02:05.822 --> 00:02:11.203
I'm with you. I haven't changed.

00:02:05.822 --> 00:02:40.143
The challenge for us is to notice. Our days are noisy and rushed and cluttered with to-do lists. If we don't slow down, we'll miss the gifts right in front of us. Gratitude begins when we pause, when we take a breath, and when we recognize that joy isn't random. It's God's fingerprint in the middle of our ordinary. I know you're waiting to hear what happens next. Well, this is what happens.

00:02:40.893 --> 00:03:03.513
Lachlan's whole face softens into a smile as he hears his parents' voices clearly for the first time. The room doesn't erupt. It just fills with that hush of wonder. Mom and Dad laughing through tears and a baby discovering a brand new world of sound. That ordinary Tuesday becomes holy ground.

00:03:04.772 --> 00:03:45.872
Lord, thank you for the little gifts you scatter through our days. Help us to notice them, to pause and give thanks, and to remember that each one points back to you, the giver of every good and perfect gift. In Jesus' name, amen.
