When Your Confidence Has Been Shaken

When Your Confidence Has Been Shaken

Key Takeaways

  • Confidence built solely on your track record or past successes is fragile because it cracks the moment your circumstances change.
  • True stability comes from shifting your foundation onto God, who remains constant even when your personal competence or life situations fail.
  • Proverbs 3:26 reminds us that the Lord is our true security and is the only footing that can keep us from falling when life creates traps.
  • Rebuilding your confidence requires acknowledging what you have been relying on—such as a job title or role—and consciously placing your trust in God instead.
  • When you find yourself shaken by a setback, you can move forward by doing your best and leaving the final outcome in God's hands.

Something knocked you down, and you have been off balance ever since. Discover why confidence built on your track record cracks, and how God rebuilds it on ground that can hold you.

There was a stretch of years when you knew who you were and what you were doing. You were good at the job, or the role you had grown into. Then something happened. The job you were sure about ended, or the thing you were certain you could handle turned out to be beyond you. You have been off balance ever since, second-guessing decisions you used to make in your sleep.

This episode opens with Shonda Whitworth, a woman who was good with money. She kept a budget and planned ahead, and being the capable one was part of how she saw herself. Then the finances came apart in a way no spreadsheet could fix, and one day this careful, capable woman was sitting in front of a bankruptcy attorney. What that does to a person is difficult to explain. It was never only about money. It was about the story she had told herself concerning who she was. Everything she had been standing on, the competence and the record of doing it right, was gone out from under her. The question on the table that day was simple and brutal: when the thing you were sure you could do turns out to be the thing that just failed, what do you have left to stand on.

Here is the trouble with the confidence most of us build. We build it on our track record, on the evidence that we are capable and have handled things before. That kind of confidence works right up until the day the evidence changes. Then it cracks, because it was resting on us the whole time.

Solomon points to a different footing. Proverbs 3:26 says, "for the LORD is your security. He will keep your foot from being caught in a trap." Security is the thing you lean your whole weight on. For years that was your competence. Solomon moves it onto firmer ground: the LORD Himself, who does not change when your circumstances do. Look at the promise attached. He will keep your foot from being caught. Solomon knows you will walk toward traps you never see coming. The promise is that God keeps your footing when you do. That kind of confidence can survive the next thing going wrong, because it does not depend on you being good enough.

This episode looks at why competence makes such a fragile foundation, and how confidence gets rebuilt on Someone who holds when everything else gives way.

BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING, YOU'LL DISCOVER:

  • Why confidence built on your track record cracks the moment the evidence changes
  • What Proverbs 3:26 means when it calls the LORD your security, and what He promises about your footing
  • A practical way to name what your confidence has been resting on and move your weight onto God

You do not have to lose everything to learn this. Confidence rooted in God can hold you when your track record cannot.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I start rebuilding your confidence when I feel like a failure?

You can begin by identifying the specific things you have been leaning on for your sense of self-worth and consciously praying to transition that reliance to God as your primary foundation.

Why does my confidence crack when things go wrong?

Confidence often cracks because it is resting on your own track record; when the evidence of your capability changes due to unforeseen circumstances, the foundation you built for yourself gives way.

What does Proverbs 3:26 say about security?

Proverbs 3:26 identifies the Lord as your security, promising that He will keep your foot from being caught in a trap even when you face challenges you do not see coming.

How can I stop second-guessing my decisions?

You can release the need for perfect outcomes by reminding yourself that you did your best, then trusting God to handle the rest, which anchors your confidence in His strength rather than your own performance.

Bart Leger:

She was She and her husband, Eldon, did the things

Bart Leger:

you're supposed to do. She kept a budget, planned ahead, and was

Bart Leger:

confident she could handle the finances and keep the family on

Bart Leger:

solid ground. herself. Some people can't balance a checkbook.

Bart Leger:

Shonda could. It was one of the things she was sure about. And

Bart Leger:

then the ground moved. The short version is that the finances

Bart Leger:

came apart. Not in a way she could budget her way out of, and

Bart Leger:

not in a way that a spreadsheet could fix. It kept getting worse,

Bart Leger:

past the point where being careful made any difference at

Bart Leger:

all. And one day, this careful, capable woman was sitting in

Bart Leger:

front of a bankruptcy attorney. If you've never been there, it's

Bart Leger:

difficult to explain what that does to a person on the inside.

Bart Leger:

It isn't only about the money. It's about the story you told

Bart Leger:

yourself concerning who you are. Shonda was the one who had it

Bart Leger:

handled. Now, the paperwork in front of her said, in black and

Bart Leger:

white, that she didn't. Everything she'd been standing

Bart Leger:

on, the competence, the record of doing it right, was gone out

Bart Leger:

from under her. So, here's the question that was really on the

Bart Leger:

table that day. When the thing you were sure you could do turns

Bart Leger:

out to be the thing that just what do you have left to stand

Bart Leger:

on? We'll come back to what Shonda found. But

Bart Leger:

first, welcome to Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. I'm

Bart Leger:

Bart Leger. Let me tell you where this one hits me. I teach

Bart Leger:

classes on psychological crisis intervention. And at the end,

Bart Leger:

every participant fills out an evaluation. And part of it is a

Bart Leger:

review of how I did. Most of them are kind. But it only takes

Bart Leger:

one negative comment to really knock my feet out from under me.

Bart Leger:

I can read 20 that say the class helped them and that I was a

Bart Leger:

great trainer. And the one that didn't is the one that follows

Bart Leger:

me home. I have to go back and remind myself that I did the

Bart Leger:

best in that room and then leave the rest with God. My confidence,

Bart Leger:

left to itself, is only as solid as the last review. Maybe you

Bart Leger:

know the feeling from maybe the far side of something bigger.

Bart Leger:

There was a stretch of years when you knew who you were and

Bart Leger:

what you were doing. You were good at the job or the role

Bart Leger:

you'd grown into. And then something happened. The job you

Bart Leger:

were sure about ended. The thing you were certain you could

Bart Leger:

handle turned out to be beyond you. And you've been off balance

Bart Leger:

ever since. Second-guessing decisions you used to make in

Bart Leger:

your sleep. Here's the thing about the confidence most of us

Bart Leger:

build. We build it on our track record, on the evidence that

Bart Leger:

we're capable, that we've handled things before. And that

Bart Leger:

kind of confidence works right up until the the evidence

Bart Leger:

changes. Then it cracks because it was resting on us the whole

Bart Leger:

time. Solomon points to a different footing. Listen to

Bart Leger:

Proverbs 3.26.

Bart Leger:

The means the thing you lean your whole weight on. For years,

Bart Leger:

that was your competence and your record of getting it right.

Bart Leger:

Solomon moved it on to firmer ground. The Lord himself, who

Bart Leger:

doesn't change when your circumstances do. And look at

Bart Leger:

the promise attached. He will keep your foot from being caught

Bart Leger:

in a trap. Solomon knows you'll walk toward traps you don't see.

Bart Leger:

The promise is that God keeps your footing when you do. That

Bart Leger:

kind of confidence can survive the next thing going wrong

Bart Leger:

because it didn't depend on you being good enough. Now let me

Bart Leger:

tell you what happened to Shonda. What Shonda found is that she

Bart Leger:

had one thing and it turned out to be the thing that held up.

Bart Leger:

She put it in a sentence later and it's one of those sentences

Bart Leger:

that sounds simple until you had to live it. When all you have is

Bart Leger:

God, you find that God's enough. That's not a line she got off a

Bart Leger:

coffee mug. She earned it in a lawyer's office with her

Bart Leger:

competence in pieces on the floor. And here's what I want

Bart Leger:

you to notice. Her confidence didn't come back the same way it

Bart Leger:

left. Before, it had been propped up by her own track

Bart Leger:

record, by the fact that she was good at this. What she rebuilt

Bart Leger:

afterward was propped up by God, which meant it could survive the

Bart Leger:

next failing because it was never resting on her being good

Bart Leger:

enough in the first place. Shonda writes and speaks now at

Bart Leger:

conferences and retreats about the healing she found in Jesus.

Bart Leger:

And when her son later went to prison, she and Eldon didn't

Bart Leger:

come apart. They built a ministry called Fortress of Hope

Bart Leger:

to walk with other families who have someone they love behind

Bart Leger:

bars. The woman whose foundation once collapsed spends her days

Bart Leger:

now helping other people find the one that doesn't. When all

Bart Leger:

you have is God, you find out that God is enough. She learned

Bart Leger:

it in the most difficult way in that lawyer's office. You don't

Bart Leger:

have to lose everything to learn it. You can start moving your

Bart Leger:

weight on to him today before the next thing gives. Here's

Bart Leger:

today's challenge. Name the thing your confidence has been

Bart Leger:

resting on. It might be the job title or the role you're known

Bart Leger:

for. Then say this to God. This is a gift from you and my

Bart Leger:

foundation is you alone, God. Ask him to rebuild your

Bart Leger:

confidence on ground that can hold you when the gift or the

Bart Leger:

ability is gone. And the next time one bad review or one

Bart Leger:

setback knocks you sideways, go back and remind yourself you did

Bart Leger:

your best and leave the rest with him.

Bart Leger:

on and you've watched some of it give way. Thank you that you

Bart Leger:

don't change when our circumstances do. Be our

Bart Leger:

security and rebuild our confidence on you so we can hold

Bart Leger:

when our track record can't. When one setback knocks us

Bart Leger:

sideways, hold us up and remind us that we've done our best and

Bart Leger:

the rest is safe in your hands. In Jesus' name, amen. This

Bart Leger:

podcast runs on the generosity of listeners just like you. If

Bart Leger:

then, God bless and have a great day.
