Don't Just Do Something - Stand Still

Don't Just Do Something - Stand Still

When everything in you wants to act, fix, or push forward, but God whispers, “Be still”, what do you do? In this episode, discover why sometimes the strongest faith is the kind that waits and lets God fight on your behalf.

When everything in you wants to act, fix, or push forward, but God whispers, “Be still”, what do you do? In this episode, discover why sometimes the strongest faith is the kind that waits and lets God fight on your behalf.

Ever face a moment when your first instinct is to take control?

Something breaks…

A plan falls apart…

A problem feels urgent…

And suddenly your heart starts saying, “Do something, anything, now.”

But what if the most faithful thing you can do isn’t to push harder but to pause?

In this episode, Bart shares the story of Chick-fil-A’s long-standing Sunday “rest” policy, an intentional choice to close their doors, trust God with the results, and honor a deeper conviction even when the world says, “Work more.” That countercultural decision has shaped their entire organization and continues decades later.

Through this story and the truth of Exodus 14:14 and Matthew 26:52–54, you’ll see that there are moments when God isn’t calling you to action, He’s calling you to stillness. You’ll learn how waiting on Him is not inactivity but trust, and how He fights for you in ways you cannot.

Main Scriptures:

Exodus 14:14 (NLT) – “The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.

Matthew 26:52–54 (NLT) – “Put away your sword… Don’t you realize I could ask my Father for thousands of angels… But if I did, how would the Scriptures be fulfilled…?”

By the end of this episode, you’ll discover:

  • The difference between impulsive action and obedient stillness
  • Why waiting can be the strongest expression of faith
  • How to slow down long enough to actually hear from God
  • What it means to let God go first, and you follow

Today’s Challenge:

Identify one area of your life where you’re tempted to take control. Instead of acting immediately, pause. Pray. Ask God: “Is this a moment to move… or a moment to stand still?”

Then wait for His direction before you make a decision.

Speak:

A national restaurant chain turns the sign to closed

Speak:

every single Sunday. On purpose. In the seven-day hustle world,

Speak:

Chick-fil-A's founder, S. Truett Cathy, decided back in 1946 to

Speak:

give his team a day of rest and worship if they choose, and the

Speak:

company still does it today. That's a countercultural choice

Speak:

to do nothing when everything around you says, do more. Why

Speak:

would a business leave that kind of money on the table?

Speak:

Welcome to Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. I'm Bart Leger, and

Speak:

today we're talking about those moments when everything in you

Speak:

wants to jump in, fix the problem, force an answer, or

Speak:

take control. But God says, stand still. That's a hard

Speak:

command for most of us, especially in a world that

Speak:

rewards action and productivity. But sometimes, acting too

Speak:

quickly is the very thing that keeps us from seeing what God

Speak:

wants to do in our lives. Exodus 14, verses 52 to 54, Jesus tells

Speak:

Peter, put away your sword. Don't you realize that I could

Speak:

ask my Father for thousands of angels? But if I did, how would

Speak:

the scriptures be fulfilled? Both moments show us something

Speak:

powerful. Sometimes, God's will unfolds, not when we move, but

Speak:

when we stop moving. Have you ever noticed how uncomfortable

Speak:

stillness can be? We want to do something, anything, to feel

Speak:

like we're making progress. For some of you, the minute a

Speak:

problem hits your life, you go straight into fix-it mode. I

Speak:

know that's me. Others tend to rush in and defend themselves,

Speak:

try to control outcomes, or take matters into their own hands.

Speak:

And honestly, sometimes that impulse comes from fear, not

Speak:

faith. That's exactly what's happening with Israel at the Red

Speak:

Sea. They saw the water in front of them, Pharaoh's army behind

Speak:

them, and panic set in. But God's word to them wasn't run

Speak:

faster or fight harder. It was counterintuitive. It was stand

Speak:

still and watch. In other words, let me do what only I can do.

Speak:

And we see the same thing with Peter. Peter, his instinct was

Speak:

to swing a sword. Jesus was being arrested, and this felt

Speak:

like the moment to fight. But Jesus stopped him, because

Speak:

acting out of fear would have actually gotten in the way of

Speak:

God's plan. Sometimes the hardest leap of faith is the

Speak:

decision not to act before God speaks. This is where

Speak:

Chick-fil-A's story comes back in. In a world that says, open

Speak:

seven days, profit every hour, they made the choice decades ago

Speak:

to rest, worship, and trust. And that weekly discipline

Speak:

communicates something deeper than business strategy. It tells

Speak:

their employees, their communities, and, I believe, the

Speak:

watching world, God's way is enough, even when it doesn't

Speak:

make sense on paper. And here's the rest. The policy hasn't

Speak:

budged. Even in airports and stadiums, and analysts estimate

Speak:

it costs well over $1 billion in sales every year. Even so,

Speak:

Chick-fil-A keeps the doors shut on Sundays because of a

Speak:

conviction deeper than profit. People need rest. And worship

Speak:

matters. Decades later, the brand remains remarkably strong

Speak:

while holding that line. As a testament to that, Chick-fil-A,

Speak:

according to 2025 reports based on 2024 data, ranks in overall

Speak:

fast food revenues behind McDonald's and Starbucks at the

Speak:

time of this recording. It has over $22. 7 billion in sales and

Speak:

is the number one fast food chicken chain. Chick-fil-A also

Speak:

has higher per-store sales than its competitors. fight for you

Speak:

is the best choice. Maybe today, your situation is calling for

Speak:

that same kind of faith. Faith that doesn't rush it or force it,

Speak:

but says, Lord, you go first. I'll wait right here until you

Speak:

lead. And here's today's challenge. Think of one

Speak:

situation in your life where your first instinct is to take

Speak:

control. And instead, pause. Pray. Ask God, is this a moment

Speak:

to move? Or, a moment to stand still. And then, give Him space

Speak:

to fight for you. Lord, You know how quickly we want to take

Speak:

matters into our own hands. Teach us to recognize the

Speak:

moments when You are calling us to wait. us peace in the

Speak:

stillness and courage in the silence and confidence that You

Speak:

are working even when we can't see it. Fight for us today and

Speak:

help us follow Your timing. In Jesus' name, amen. If this

Speak:

episode encouraged you, chances are it'll encourage someone you

world to me. Thanks for joining me today on Daily Devotions for
