Still punishing yourself for something God has already forgiven? In this episode, discover why accepting His forgiveness isn't optional, and why you don't have the authority to keep condemning yourself when God has declared you free.
Have you ever known in your head that God forgives you, but still felt unable to forgive yourself?
You've confessed. You've repented. But the guilt and shame keep circling back. You replay the failure, rehearse the regret, and quietly believe that what you did was too bad, too foolish, or too costly to ever really be forgiven. You offer grace to others but refuse to receive it for yourself.
In this episode, we look at the story of Craig Groeschel, founder of Life.Church, who preached "no condemnation" to thousands while privately drowning in self-accusation. He knew the right answers. He taught Romans 8:1 to everyone else. But when he looked in the mirror, all he saw was unworthiness. His breakthrough came when he chose to trust God's Word over his own feelings, and stopped rehearsing sins that God had already removed "as far as the east is from the west."
Through his story and the truth of Romans 8:1, you'll see that refusing to forgive yourself isn't humility, it's disagreement with God. If He no longer condemns you, you don't have the authority to keep condemning yourself. Accepting His forgiveness isn't arrogance. It's obedience.
BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING, YOU'LL DISCOVER:
- The difference between conviction that leads you toward God and condemnation that pushes you away
- Why holding onto guilt after God has forgiven you is actually a form of unbelief
- A simple declaration you can speak over yourself to retrain your heart to believe what God has already declared
God's verdict is final. The case is closed. It's time to stop holding court on a case He's already dismissed.

A pastor stands in front of thousands every week,
Track 1 00:00:04
preaching about grace, forgiveness, and the freedom
Track 1 00:00:07
found in Christ. But behind the scenes, Craig Groeschel, the
Track 1 00:00:12
founder of Life. Church, was drowning in guilt and shame.
Track 1 00:00:16
He's spoken about a season early in ministry when he felt like a
Track 1 00:00:20
fraud, leading others while privately wondering if his past
Track 1 00:00:24
disqualified him. He knew the right answers, and he preached
Track 1 00:00:28
no condemnation to everyone else. But when he looked in the mirror,
Track 1 00:00:32
all he saw was unworthiness. Why would someone who teaches grace
Track 1 00:00:36
for a living struggle so deeply to receive it for himself?
Track 1 00:00:43
Welcome to Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. I'm Bart Leger, and
Track 1 00:00:49
today we're talking about one of the hardest battles many
Track 1 00:00:52
believers face, and that is forgiving yourself. But Romans,
Track 1 00:00:57
chapter 8, verse 1, says, So now there is no condemnation for
Track 1 00:01:03
those who belong to Christ Jesus. No condemnation. Not less
Track 1 00:01:08
condemnation. on hold until you mess up again. No, it says no
Track 1 00:01:15
condemnation. If you belong to Christ, the verdict is final.
Track 1 00:01:19
The case is closed. God has declared you forgiven, righteous,
Track 1 00:01:23
and free. And yet, so many of us live like the judge is still
Track 1 00:01:27
deliberating. We replay our failures, and we rehearse our
Track 1 00:01:32
shame. We sometimes look at our past and think, Yes, God
Track 1 00:01:37
forgives others. But what I did is different. What I did is
Track 1 00:01:41
worse. I should have known better. Now, this is one thing
Track 1 00:01:44
that I know. When you refuse to forgive yourself after God has
Track 1 00:01:48
forgiven you, you're not being humble. You're disagreeing with
Track 1 00:01:52
God. You're saying your standard is higher than His. You're
Track 1 00:01:56
holding court on a case He's already dismissed. That's not
Track 1 00:02:00
humility. That's unbelief dressed up as guilt. Now, I want
Track 1 00:02:04
to be careful here. There's a difference between conviction
Track 1 00:02:08
and condemnation. Conviction is the Holy Spirit pointing out sin
Track 1 00:02:13
so you can repent and be restored. It leads you toward
Track 1 00:02:17
God. Condemnation is the enemy's voice telling you you're
Track 1 00:02:21
worthless, you're disqualified, and you're beyond hope. It
Track 1 00:02:25
pushes you away from God. If you've confessed your sin and
Track 1 00:02:29
turned from it, conviction has done its job. What remains is
Track 1 00:02:33
often condemnation, and that's not from God. Psalm 103.12 says,
Track 1 00:02:39
He has removed our sins as far as the east is from the west. If
Track 1 00:02:44
God has removed your sin that far, why do we keep walking back
Track 1 00:02:48
to pick it up? Some of us have been carrying shame for years.
Track 1 00:02:51
Maybe it's a moral failure or a broken relationship. It's
Track 1 00:02:56
possibly words we said that we can't take back. Choices that
Track 1 00:03:00
hurt people we love. And every time we start to feel free, the
Track 1 00:03:05
enemy whispers, Remember what you did. You don't deserve grace.
Track 1 00:03:11
But grace was never about deserving. That's the whole
Track 1 00:03:14
point. If you could earn it, then it wouldn't be grace. Craig
Track 1 00:03:19
realized he was believing the gospel for everyone except
Track 1 00:03:23
himself. He was offering Romans 8.1 to his congregation while
Track 1 00:03:27
living under constant self-accusation. The turning
Track 1 00:03:30
point came when he chose to trust God's word over his own
Track 1 00:03:34
feelings, to stop rehearsing sins that had already been
Track 1 00:03:38
removed as far as the east is from the west. Freedom didn't
Track 1 00:03:42
come from finally feeling worthy. It came from accepting that
Track 1 00:03:46
God's verdict is final, even when his heart still accused him.
Track 1 00:03:50
If God no longer condemns you, you don't have the authority to
Track 1 00:03:54
keep condemning yourself. Accepting his forgiveness isn't
Track 1 00:03:58
optional. It's obedience. Maybe that's where you are today.
Track 1 00:04:02
You've confessed and you've repented, but you haven't let
Track 1 00:04:06
yourself be free. You're still punishing yourself for something
Track 1 00:04:09
God has already forgiven. Here's what I want you to understand.
Track 1 00:04:13
Accepting God's forgiveness is not arrogance. It's trust. It's
Track 1 00:04:17
saying, Lord, I believe what you said about me more than what I
Track 1 00:04:21
feel about myself. You may not feel forgiven, and you may not
Track 1 00:04:26
feel worthy, but feelings are not the final word. God's word
Track 1 00:04:30
is. And his word said, There is no condemnation for those who
Track 1 00:04:34
belong to Christ Jesus. Here's today's challenge. Think of one
Track 1 00:04:38
thing from your past that you've been holding against yourself.
Track 1 00:04:41
Something maybe you keep rehearsing, something that still
Track 1 00:04:44
makes you feel disqualified or unworthy. Now, out loud, if you
Track 1 00:04:49
can, say this, God has forgiven me for this. There is no
Track 1 00:04:53
condemnation for me in Christ. I don't have the authority to keep
Track 1 00:04:57
condemning myself. I receive his forgiveness today. You may need
Track 1 00:05:01
to say it more than once. You may need to say it every day for
Track 1 00:05:05
a while. That's okay. You're retraining your heart to believe
Track 1 00:05:08
what God has already declared. been carrying guilt and shame
Track 1 00:05:14
for far too long. We believe the lie that we are beyond your
Track 1 00:05:18
grace, that our past disqualifies us, and that we
Track 1 00:05:21
don't deserve to be free. Forgive us for disagreeing with
Track 1 00:05:24
your verdict. Help us to accept the forgiveness you've already
Track 1 00:05:27
given. When the accuser reminds us of our past, remind us of
Track 1 00:05:31
your word. There is no condemnation for those who
Track 1 00:05:35
belong to Christ Jesus. Set us free today. In Jesus' name, amen.
