What to Do When You've Been Ghosted by a Friend

What to Do When You've Been Ghosted by a Friend

Key Takeaways

  • When a close friend ghosted you, the resulting pain is a legitimate loss that often qualifies as disenfranchised grief because society rarely recognizes it.
  • King David experienced the deep sting of betrayal by a close companion in Psalm 55, proving that feeling devastated by a vanished friend is entirely valid.
  • Instead of burying your confusion or waiting for closure that may never come, you can bring your raw grief straight to God.
  • Jesus understands this unique ache personally, having faced abandonment and betrayal by His own friends on the night He was arrested.
  • God will never ghost you or walk away without a word; He remains a constant presence who stays with you when human relationships fade.

When a close friend disappears without a word, the world rarely treats it as a loss. Discover why that grief is allowed, and how David and Jesus both knew the sting of being abandoned by a friend.

One of the more disorienting hurts in life is when someone who was close to you disappears. No explanation, no conversation. They just stopped responding, and now weeks or months have gone by. Because there was no ending and no reason given, your mind goes to work trying to supply one. You run back through your memory looking for what you did wrong, and a lot of the time you never find the answer. What makes it worse is that hardly anyone treats it as a loss. When someone dies, people bring meals and gather around. When a friend quietly walks out of your life, you're expected to shrug and move on.

This episode opens with Diana, who met Lindsay at UCLA and became inseparable with her for years. Then Lindsay moved away for a banking job, the calls started going unanswered, and one message became a long stretch of nothing. Diana kept making excuses for her friend until she finally admitted the truth: she'd been dropped, and no one was ever going to explain it.

Scripture speaks straight to that wound. In Psalm 55:12-14, King David wrote, "For it is not an enemy who reproaches me; then I could bear it... But it was you, a man my equal, my companion and my acquaintance. We took sweet counsel together." David could have handled an attack from an enemy. What cut him down was that the betrayal came from a close friend, someone he had prayed with and walked into worship beside. The closeness is what made the wound so deep, and David brought that grief straight to God instead of burying it.

You can do the same. You don't have to have it resolved first or understand why they left. And the God you bring it to knows the sting from the inside. On the night He was betrayed, one of Jesus' own friends handed Him over and the rest scattered. So when you tell God about the friend who ghosted you, you're bringing it to the one Person who understands completely and who will never do that to you. People may disappear without a word. God stays. Bart shares his own lost friendship, one that faded after a move and was never explained. Diana found her healing the same way: months later a therapist gave it a name, disenfranchised grief, and once it had a name she let herself grieve it as the loss it was.

BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING, YOU'LL DISCOVER:

  • Why being ghosted by a friend is a loss that deserves grief, even when no one else treats it that way
  • What Psalm 55:12-14 shows about David grieving betrayal by a close friend
  • A simple step for naming your loss and bringing it to God

When a friend disappears without a word, that grief counts. Bring it to the God who was abandoned Himself, name it for the loss it was, and let yourself grieve.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does it hurt so much when a friend ghosts you?

When a friend ghosted you without explanation, your mind gets stuck searching for answers, and the lack of closure creates a confusing ache that is difficult to process alone.

What is disenfranchised grief in friendship?

Disenfranchised grief is a loss that is not openly acknowledged, socially mourned, or publicly supported, much like when a friend quietly disappears from your life and society expects you to just move on.

What does the Bible say about being betrayed by a friend?

In Psalm 55:12-14, King David writes about the deep anguish of being betrayed by a close companion and confidant, showing that biblical figures also carried the heavy wound of relational abandonment.

How can I heal when a friend ghosted you?

You can begin to heal by giving the loss a name, accepting that your grief is allowed, and taking your honest confusion and hurt directly to God in prayer.

Track 1 00:00:01

Diana and Lindsay met at UCLA and within a year they

Track 1 00:00:05

were inseparable. They roomed together and traveled together.

Track 1 00:00:08

Lindsay was the friend who knew Diana's moods before Diana said

Track 1 00:00:11

a word, the one she called first with news. For years that

Track 1 00:00:15

friendship was one of the surest things in her life.

Track 1 00:00:19

in San Francisco and moved away. At first the distance seemed

Track 1 00:00:23

like nothing. Friends drifted a little when the miles stack up

Track 1 00:00:26

and Diana figured they'd close that gap the way they always had.

Track 1 00:00:30

Soon the calls start going unanswered. One unanswered

Track 1 00:00:34

message became several and the several became a long stretch of

Track 1 00:00:37

nothing. Diana told herself Lindsay was busy, that the new

Track 1 00:00:41

job was swallowing her whole. We'll come back to what Diana

Track 1 00:00:45

finally realized, but first,

Track 1 00:00:49

welcome to Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. I'm Bart Leger. I've

Track 1 00:00:54

lost a friend this with a man I talked to almost every week. The

Track 1 00:00:58

kind of friend you tell the things you don't tell anyone

Track 1 00:01:01

else. Then, one of us moved for work and the calls got shorter

Track 1 00:01:05

and further apart and one day they just stopped. There was no

Track 1 00:01:09

falling out that I know of. No goodbye. To this day, I couldn't

Track 1 00:01:12

tell you exactly what happened and every so often his name

Track 1 00:01:15

crosses my mind and I still wonder. So I know a little bit

Track 1 00:01:18

about what this hurt does to a person. Maybe you do too. One of

Track 1 00:01:22

the more disorienting hurts in life is when someone who was

Track 1 00:01:26

close to you disappears. No explanation. No conversation.

Track 1 00:01:30

They just stopped responding and now weeks or months have gone by.

Track 1 00:01:32

supply one. You run back through your own memory looking for the

Track 1 00:01:42

thing you said. The moment it turned, sometimes you don't find

Track 1 00:01:46

anything. A lot of the time, you never find the answer at all.

Track 1 00:01:50

And that not knowing becomes its own kind of ache. What makes it

Track 1 00:01:54

worse is that hardly anyone treats it as a loss. When

Track 1 00:01:57

someone dies, people bring meals and gather around. When a friend

Track 1 00:02:01

quietly walks out of your life, you're expected to shrug and

Track 1 00:02:04

move on as if a person you love didn't vanish. So you grieve it

Track 1 00:02:08

alone and part of you wonders if you're even allowed to be hurt

Track 1 00:02:12

over a friendship. You are. And the Bible has words for exactly

Track 1 00:02:16

this. From a man who lived it. Listen to King David in Psalm 55,

Track 1 00:02:20

verses 12-14.

Track 1 00:02:36

Hear what David is saying. He could have handled an enemy, an

Track 1 00:02:44

attack from someone who hated him. He could brace for. What

Track 1 00:02:47

cut him down was that this came from a friend. A man he had

Track 1 00:02:51

talked with, prayed with, walked into worship beside. The

Track 1 00:02:55

closeness is what made the wound so deep. You don't ache like

Track 1 00:02:58

this over a stranger. You ache like this because you love them

Track 1 00:03:01

and they were woven into your life. Notice what David does

Track 1 00:03:05

with that pain. He doesn't bury it and he doesn't pretend he's

Track 1 00:03:08

fine. He says it to God while the hurt's still raw. And I

Track 1 00:03:12

think that's permission for you. You can take this exact grief,

Track 1 00:03:16

the confusion and the missing, them all mixed together, and

Track 1 00:03:19

bring it straight to God the way David did. There's no need to

Track 1 00:03:22

have it resolved first or even understand why they left. You

Track 1 00:03:27

just have to tell the truth to the one who's listening. He

Track 1 00:03:30

understands. The God you bring this to knows the sting of it

Track 1 00:03:34

from experience. One night he was betrayed. One of Jesus' own

Track 1 00:03:39

friends hand him over and the rest scattered. He has been

Track 1 00:03:43

abandoned by people he loved. So when you tell him about the

Track 1 00:03:46

friend who ghosted you, you're bringing it to the person who

Track 1 00:03:49

understands completely and who will never do that to you.

Track 1 00:03:52

People may disappear without a word. God doesn't. He will not

Track 1 00:03:56

stop responding and he won't move on to newer friends. He

Track 1 00:04:00

stays with you. It didn't pass. One day, Diana said the words to

Track 1 00:04:04

herself. She'd been dumped and no one was ever going to explain

Track 1 00:04:08

it. She suspected Lindsay had just moved on to newer friends,

Track 1 00:04:12

though she never got the confirmation or even a goodbye.

Track 1 00:04:15

Months later, across from a therapist, Diana finally heard a

Track 1 00:04:19

name for what she'd been feeling. Disenfranchised grief, the

Track 1 00:04:23

therapist called it. The kind of loss the world never thinks to

Track 1 00:04:26

mourn with you. Once it had a name, Diana let herself grieve

Track 1 00:04:30

it as the loss it was. Diana never got an explanation and she

Track 1 00:04:35

stopped waiting for one. What helped her was giving the loss

Track 1 00:04:38

its name and letting herself grieve it. You can do that today.

Track 1 00:04:42

Call it what it was. A friendship you valued ended and

Track 1 00:04:45

it hurt and the grief is allowed. Here's today's challenge. Take a

Track 1 00:04:50

few minutes today and tell God about the friend you lost. Skip

Track 1 00:04:53

the tiny prayer and say it openly that it confused you and

Track 1 00:04:57

that you still missed them. Then name the loss for what it is. A

Track 1 00:05:01

friendship that mattered and ended. Give yourself permission

Track 1 00:05:04

to grieve it the same way you'd grieve any other loss that

Track 1 00:05:08

counted. Father, you know what it is to be left by people you

Track 1 00:05:12

loved. So you know this ache personally. Thank you that we

Track 1 00:05:16

can bring to you the friendships that ended without a word, the

Track 1 00:05:20

ones we're still confused about. We don't understand why they

Track 1 00:05:23

walked away and we may never know. Help us grieve what we

Track 1 00:05:27

lost instead of burying it. And thank you that you will never

Track 1 00:05:30

ghost us and never move on. You will stay with us. In Jesus'

Track 1 00:05:35

name, amen. If you need prayer today, I'd love to hear from you.

Track 1 00:05:55

never do it to you. Come back next time for more encouragement
