Do you ever feel like you did everything "right" but God didn't hold up His end of the bargain? In this episode, discover how to break free from a transactional view of faith and learn to praise God for who He is, even in the pain.

Have you ever secretly felt cheated by God when life fell apart despite your faithful obedience?

Subconsciously, many of us treat God like a cosmic vending machine. We believe that if we read our Bibles, serve at church, tithe, and live right, we can insert our good deeds and receive a pain-free life in return. We assume we have a quiet deal with God: our good behavior in exchange for His protection.

But when a devastating diagnosis hits, a relationship fails, or a job is lost, the machine gets stuck. We start keeping a spiritual scorecard, wondering why our obedience wasn't enough to secure a blessing, and resentment begins to take root. In this episode, we explore the heart-wrenching story of Kara Tippetts, a young pastor's wife and mother of four who was diagnosed with terminal cancer despite doing everything "right." Through her profound journey and the staggering reaction of Job in Job 1:21, you'll see why letting go of a transactional faith is the only way to survive life's darkest valleys.

BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING, YOU’LL DISCOVER:

  1. Why treating God like a vending machine ultimately leads to spiritual exhaustion and bitterness
  2. How Job’s response to losing absolutely everything completely shatters the "good behavior equals good circumstances" myth
  3. The deep, anchoring freedom found in praising God for who He is, rather than just what He gives

True faith isn't anchored in the comfort of your circumstances; it's anchored in the unchanging character of God.

A young pastor's wife and mother of four thought she

Track 1 00:00:03

was living the exact story she and God had agreed upon. Kara

Track 1 00:00:07

Tippetts and her husband were planting a church and serving

Track 1 00:00:10

selflessly in their community, and they were raising children

Track 1 00:00:14

to love Jesus. They were doing everything right. Subconsciously,

Track 1 00:00:18

many of us make a similar deal with God, don't we? If we serve

Track 1 00:00:21

faithfully and read our Bibles and live right, God will bless

Track 1 00:00:24

us and keep tragedy away. But then came a devastating doctor's

Track 1 00:00:29

appointment that changed everything. Kara was diagnosed

Track 1 00:00:32

with terminal breast cancer in her late thirties. As the

Track 1 00:00:36

disease slowly stripped away her energy and her ability to mother

Track 1 00:00:39

her young kids, she was faced with a crushing reality. Her

Track 1 00:00:43

desperate prayers for a cure weren't being answered. When

Track 1 00:00:47

your life falls apart despite your faithful obedience, why

Track 1 00:00:51

would you keep worshiping a God who seemingly doesn't hold up

Track 1 00:00:54

His end of the bargain?

Track 1 00:00:57

Welcome to Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. I'm Bart Leger. I've

Track 1 00:01:02

been a pastor for over 40 years, and over that time, I've come to

Track 1 00:01:06

learn that God really does know best. I've prayed some pretty

Track 1 00:01:10

audacious prayers that God chose not to answer the way I wanted.

Track 1 00:01:14

But looking back, I often had to admit that if God had given me

Track 1 00:01:18

what I wanted, based on previously unforeseen

Track 1 00:01:21

circumstances, things would have not worked out so well. We often

Track 1 00:01:25

fall into a mindset that derails many Christians. Many times,

Track 1 00:01:29

without realizing it, we have a transactional view of faith.

Track 1 00:01:34

It's so freeing to finally realize God loves us and wants

Track 1 00:01:37

the best for us. He's not obligated to grant every one of

Track 1 00:01:41

our requests just because we ask for it. True worship adores God

Track 1 00:01:46

for who He is, even when He chooses not to fulfill our every

Track 1 00:01:51

wish. Listen to the words in Job 1.21. After losing his wealth,

Track 1 00:01:55

his livelihood, and all of his children in a single day, this

Track 1 00:01:58

is what Job says. He said, I came naked from my mother's womb,

Track 1 00:02:02

and I will be naked when I leave. The Lord gave me what I had, and

Track 1 00:02:06

the Lord has taken it away. Praise the name of the Lord. If

Track 1 00:02:11

anyone had the right to feel cheated by God, I believe it was

Track 1 00:02:14

Job.

Track 1 00:02:17

blameless man of complete integrity. He did everything

Track 1 00:02:21

right. He offered sacrifices and prayed, and he obeyed. He was

Track 1 00:02:25

holding up his end of the bargain perfectly. his faith

Track 1 00:02:35

would have been destroyed right there in the ashes. He would

Track 1 00:02:38

have felt completely short-changed. He would have

Track 1 00:02:41

probably cursed God and walked away. I've known so many who

Track 1 00:02:45

gave up on God. because he didn't come through at a

Track 1 00:02:48

critical time in their life the way they expected. They prayed

Track 1 00:02:52

so hard, and they believed. But Job understood something deeper.

Track 1 00:02:56

He recognized that God is not a cosmic vending machine. We don't

Track 1 00:03:01

insert our good works, our church attendance, our Bible

Track 1 00:03:04

reading like coins, press a button, and then watch our

Track 1 00:03:07

preferred blessings drop out. God is a sovereign creator, and

Track 1 00:03:11

he owes us nothing. Yet, out of his grace, he gives us exactly

Track 1 00:03:15

what we need, even if it looks very differently from what we

Track 1 00:03:18

asked for. When we treat God like a vending machine, we end

Track 1 00:03:23

up resenting him when the machine gets stuck. We start

Track 1 00:03:26

keeping a spiritual scorecard. Lord, I went on that mission

Track 1 00:03:30

trip. I forgave that person who hurt me. served in the church

Track 1 00:03:33

for decades. Why did I still lose my job? Why did the

Track 1 00:03:37

relationship not work out? Why am I the one who's sick? But

Track 1 00:03:41

true faith, the kind of faith that survives the darkest, most

Track 1 00:03:45

painful valleys, is anchored in the character of God, not in the

Track 1 00:03:49

comfort of our circumstances. When things showed no signs of

Track 1 00:03:54

getting better, Kara realized she had to let go of that

Track 1 00:03:57

transactional view of faith. In her book, The Hardest Peace, she

Track 1 00:04:02

wrote about discovering that God is not a cosmic vending machine

Track 1 00:04:05

where we put in our good deeds and pull out our desired

Track 1 00:04:08

blessings. He was not obligated to grant her request just

Track 1 00:04:11

because she asked for it. Instead of a contractor who

Track 1 00:04:14

shortchanged her, she found a loving father who was willing to

Track 1 00:04:17

sit intimately with her in the pain. She chose to simply love

Track 1 00:04:21

God for who He is, even when He chooses not to fulfill our every

Track 1 00:04:25

wish. You might be walking through a season right now where

Track 1 00:04:29

you feel God didn't hold up His end of the deal. You've been

Track 1 00:04:32

faithful, but life is still incredibly hard, and your

Track 1 00:04:36

prayers feel unanswered. Here's today's challenge. Take a moment

Track 1 00:04:40

today and honestly examine your heart. Are you serving a God for

Track 1 00:04:44

who He is, or are you secretly serving Him for what you hope

Track 1 00:04:48

He'll give you? I invite you to pray a prayer of complete

Track 1 00:04:51

surrender today. Lay down your scorecards, release your

Track 1 00:04:55

expectations, and choose to praise the name of the Lord, not

Track 1 00:04:58

just for what He does, but for who He is. Lord, forgive us for

Track 1 00:05:03

the times we treat you like a vending machine. We confess that

Track 1 00:05:06

it's so easy to fall into a transactional relationship with

Track 1 00:05:10

you, quietly expecting a pain-free life in exchange for

Track 1 00:05:13

our obedience. When life gets hard, help us to remember that

Track 1 00:05:17

your presence in the pain is a far greater gift than a life

Track 1 00:05:21

without struggles. Give us the faith of Job to say, praise the

Track 1 00:05:25

name of the Lord in every possible season. In Jesus' name,

Track 1 00:05:30

amen. If you're dealing with the pain of an unexpected trial and

Track 1 00:05:34

you feel disappointed with God right now, I would love to pray

Track 1 00:05:38

with you. Just leave me a voicemail at

Track 1 00:05:40

dailydevotionsforbusylives.com slash voicemail, and I'll pray

Track 1 00:05:45

for you by name. Thanks for joining me on Daily Devotions

Track 1 00:05:49

for Busy Lives. Remember, God is not a vending machine, but He is

Track 1 00:05:53

a loving Father who sits with you in the pain. Come back next

Track 1 00:05:57

time for more encouragement to help you live grounded in God's

Track 1 00:06:00

truth. Until then, God bless and have a great day.
