Feeling like your best years are behind you? Today’s episode will encourage you to see your story as a gift—one that can bring life and hope to the next generation.
Do you ever wonder if what you’ve been through really matters to anyone else?
In today’s episode, we’ll explore the story of Granny, an elderly killer whale who cared for her great-grandson when no one else could. More importantly, we’ll look at how Psalm 71 calls you to share your faith and life experience with those coming behind you. You don’t have to be perfect—you just have to be present.
BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING, YOU’LL DISCOVER:
- Why your life story is still a vital part of God’s work in the world
- What the Bible says about proclaiming God’s faithfulness as we age
- How a simple word of encouragement can shape someone’s future
You’ve walked with God through valleys and mountaintops. Now it’s time to pass it on.

In the waters of the Pacific Northwest, a killer whale known as “Granny” amazed researchers with what she did late in her life.
She was believed to be in her eighties—thin, tired, and long past her reproductive years. And yet, in 2016, aerial photos captured her doing something remarkable: she was sharing fish with a young whale named J45, her apparent great-grandson.
J45’s mother had died, and he wasn’t old enough to survive on his own. So Granny stepped in. She nurtured him, swam with him, and fed him.
Scientists have long known that killer whales live for decades after they stop reproducing. But Granny’s actions reminded everyone that those post-reproductive years have purpose.
Even at the end of her life, she was still passing on life—quite literally—to the next generation.
Welcome to Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. I’m Bart Leger. Today’s devotion is a powerful reminder that your story, your wisdom, and your faith still matter—especially to those coming behind you.
Psalm 71:18 (NLT) says:
“Now that I am old and gray, do not abandon me, O God. Let me proclaim your power to this new generation, your mighty miracles to all who come after me.”
The psalmist isn’t asking for more years just to coast through retirement. He’s asking for strength to pour into others.
And I think we all need that reminder—because no matter your age, you have something to give.
Maybe you’re not as fast or as sharp as you once were. But your faith, your stories, your scars, your lessons—they matter.
There’s a younger generation watching. And they’re desperate for real examples of faith that lasts.
So don’t underestimate the impact of simply sharing what you’ve learned. A conversation over coffee. A text of encouragement. A Bible verse that got you through something hard.
The next generation doesn’t just need content. They need connection. They need to see people who’ve walked with God through valleys and mountaintops—and who are still proclaiming His faithfulness.
Like Granny the whale, you may feel tired. You may wonder if what you have to offer is enough. But just your presence, your care, your voice—it can change someone’s life.
So who in your life could use a word of hope? Who needs to hear what God has done for you?
Don’t keep it to yourself. Pass it on.
“Lord, thank You for the faith You’ve built in me over the years. Help me to see the younger generation not as a burden, but as a calling. Give me boldness to share Your faithfulness with those who are coming behind. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
If today’s devotion encouraged you, would you share it with someone who needs hope and direction.
Let’s be people who pass on God’s goodness—because someone out there needs your story.
Thanks for joining me today on Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. Remember—your faith isn’t just for you. It’s a legacy worth passing on. Come back next time for more encouragement to help you live grounded in God’s truth. Till then, God bless, and have a great day!
