Feeling overwhelmed by nonstop decisions at work and home? In this episode, discover how God promises wisdom when decision fatigue sets in, and how asking Him can bring clarity and peace, even in everyday choices.
Have you ever reached the end of the day and felt completely stuck over something small, like what to cook for dinner or whether to answer one more message?
That’s decision fatigue, and it’s more common than we realize.
In this episode, Bart talks about a mom named Kellie who found herself frozen in front of her refrigerator, not because she didn’t have options, but because she’d already made too many decisions that day. Her mind was worn out, and even simple choices felt overwhelming.
Through her story and the promise of James 1:5, you’ll be reminded that God never intended for you to carry the weight of every decision alone. Scripture tells us that when we lack wisdom, we can ask our generous God, and He will give it without rebuke.
This episode will help you see that:
- Decision fatigue is real, and it affects your peace and clarity
- God invites you to ask for wisdom in small, everyday choices
- You don’t need the perfect decision, just the next faithful step
- God’s wisdom brings calm, not pressure
Main Scripture:
James 1:5 (NLT)
“If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.”
Today’s Challenge:
The next time you feel overwhelmed by a decision, pause and pray James 1:5 out loud. Ask God for wisdom, then take the next simple step in faith. You don’t have to solve everything, just ask.

Speak:
By late afternoon, one mom stood in her kitchen staring
Speak:
into the refrigerator and couldn't decide what to do next.
Speak:
Not because there were no options, but because she had
Speak:
already made too many decisions that day. Kelly Scott described
Speak:
how the smallest choices, what's for dinner, when to answer a
Speak:
text, and whether to push through one more task, suddenly
Speak:
felt overwhelming. All day long, she'd been deciding at work and
Speak:
at home, and by evening her mind was simply worn out.
Speak:
Psychologists have a name for it. Decision fatigue. When your
Speak:
ability to choose gets quietly drained by the sheer number of
Speak:
choices you've already made. How are we supposed to handle all
Speak:
the decisions we face in a typical day?
Speak:
Welcome to Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. I'm Bart Leger, and
Speak:
today we're talking about something most of us feel but
Speak:
don't always have words for. That paralyzed, mentally
Speak:
exhausted feeling that comes from making decision after
Speak:
decision all day long. Some of you wake up already deciding
Speak:
what to wear, what to say, what to tackle first. Wait. And then,
Speak:
the emails start coming, the kids need answers, work demands
Speak:
attention, and by the end of the day, your brain just says, I am
Speak:
done. And when one more choice pops up, even a small one, it
Speak:
feels like too much. Here's the good news. God never meant for
Speak:
you to carry the weight of every decision alone. James 1.5 says,
Speak:
I how practical that verse is. It doesn't say, if you need
Speak:
wisdom for the really big spiritual decisions. It just
Speak:
says, if you need wisdom, period. God invites you to ask for
Speak:
whatever you need, even in the everyday choices that drain you.
Speak:
Decision fatigue is real. And here's what makes it especially
Speak:
critical. When we're tired, we start believing that every
Speak:
decision is high stakes. We second-guess ourselves, and we
Speak:
worry about messing it up. We replay conversations, and we
Speak:
rehearse outcomes that may never happen. And before long, we're
Speak:
not just tired, we become anxious. But James reminds us of
Speak:
something freeing. Wisdom is not something you have to
Speak:
manufacture. It's something God gives. want you to notice the
Speak:
tone of the verse. God is called generous. He doesn't roll his
Speak:
eyes when you ask. He doesn't say, Oh, come on, you should
Speak:
know this by now. And he doesn't shame you for needing help. He
Speak:
invites you to come again and again. That means when you're
Speak:
standing in the kitchen or the garage at the end of the day and
Speak:
your brain feels fried, you can whisper, Lord, I need wisdom for
Speak:
this next step. And when you're deciding how to respond to an
Speak:
email, when to say no, or whether to push through or rest,
Speak:
God is there with you in those moments. And here's something
Speak:
else that helps. Not every decision needs the same amount
Speak:
of wisdom. I mean, some choices really matter, and others,
Speak:
they're just choices. Wisdom often looks like slowing down
Speak:
long enough to ask, Is this something I need to pray through
Speak:
or something I can just release? And that's where God's peace
Speak:
comes in. When you ask him for wisdom, he doesn't just give
Speak:
direction. He gives calm, and he helps you see the next right
Speak:
step instead of carrying the weight of every possible outcome.
Speak:
Now, let's get back to Kelly's story. Kelly realized that by
Speak:
evening, her problem wasn't the refrigerator or dinner. It was
Speak:
exhaustion. What helped wasn't finding the perfect choice, but
Speak:
giving herself permission to pause. And she learned to stop
Speak:
asking, what's the best possible decision? And start asking,
Speak:
what's a good enough next step? And for us, let's not stop there.
Speak:
Begin inviting God into those everyday moments. You don't need
Speak:
long prayers. Sometimes, just a simple, God, help me decide, is
Speak:
enough. That simple prayer can help you move forward without
Speak:
the pressure of getting everything right on your own. So
Speak:
here is today's challenge. The next time you feel stuck or
Speak:
overwhelmed by a decision, whether it's big or small, pause
Speak:
and pray James 1-5 out loud. Ask God for wisdom and then take the
Speak:
next faithful step you can see. You don't need to solve the
Speak:
whole day. You just need enough wisdom for this moment. Lord,
Speak:
you know how many decisions we carry every single day. You see
Speak:
the mental fatigue and the pressure and the fear that we
Speak:
have in getting it wrong. Thank you that you're generous with
Speak:
wisdom and patient with our weakness. Teach us to ask you,
Speak:
to trust you, and to rest in the guidance you provide, one
Speak:
decision at a time. In Jesus' name, amen. for joining me today
Speak:
on Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. Remember, when the
Speak:
choices feel overwhelming, you're not meant to figure them
Speak:
all out alone. God promises wisdom when you ask. Come back
Speak:
next time for more encouragement to help you live grounded in
Speak:
God's truth. Until then, God bless and have a great day.
