It’s so easy to say things we regret. A sarcastic jab. A frustrated sigh. A careless comment that lands harder than we meant it to. And at the end of the day, we’re left wondering, Did my words make someone better—or just more broken?
This is Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. I’m Bart Leger, and today we’re looking at something that’s always with you—your words—and how God wants to use them to bring life, not harm.
Proverbs 18:21 says this:
“The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.” (NLT)
That’s not just a metaphor. That’s a reminder—your words leave a mark.
Your voice might be more powerful than you think. You don’t have to be loud, famous, or in charge to speak life. One kind word can reroute someone’s entire day. One careless word can crush someone’s confidence.
And here’s the thing—we don’t always realize which kind we’re speaking.
Sometimes life gets so busy, so noisy, that we don’t pause long enough to ask, “How will these words land?”
But Proverbs 18 is clear: our words build or break. Heal or hurt. Speak life… or something less.
So what does it mean to speak life?
It means encouragement instead of criticism. Grace instead of sarcasm. Truth instead of silence.
It doesn’t mean you fake positivity. It means you choose purpose. You speak what lifts others up and reminds them who they are in Christ.
So today, slow down. Speak intentionally. And remember—your words may be exactly what someone else is praying for.
Here’s your challenge: speak one intentional word of life to someone today. A text, a call, a thank-you, a prayer—whatever it looks like, let it bless.
“God, help me use my words to bring life today. Show me where to encourage, where to speak truth, and when to be quiet. Let my mouth reflect Your heart. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
