A few years ago, I was hunting with my dad in some unfamiliar woods. It was an evening hunt, and I waited a little too long in my stand. It was dark when I started back to the truck.
It was a fairly rough trail I had used to come in and not well marked. And I had walked in for about twenty minutes before I found the tree I wanted to climb. So, getting on my way after dark, I got started in the right direction. But I had no sooner begun walking when the unthinkable happened. My flashlight went totally dead. I had pulled a super-dumb move. I forgot to put fresh batteries in my pack.
Thankfully, my compass had those little luminescent dots. They were pretty faint, but they got me going in the general direction of the truck. After thirty minutes or so of stumbling around, my spirits soared. There among the trees, a good ways off, I saw a light. My dad was standing at the edge of the woods shining his light in my direction. I was never so happy to see that light.
I think life feels like that sometimes—dark, confusing, uncertain. But the good news is, God always leaves the light on.
John 1:5 says:
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.”
Not “might not”—never.
You might be walking through a dark season right now. Loss, depression, uncertainty, fear. And in those places, it can feel like the light of God’s goodness has dimmed or disappeared.
But according to John 1, that’s impossible.
Jesus is the Light of the World. He doesn’t leave when the darkness comes—He enters it.
And not only does His light shine—it overcomes. Darkness doesn’t stand a chance.
You may not feel it. You may not see the breakthrough yet. But the light of Christ is still burning over your life, guiding you, guarding you, reminding you: You are not alone.
Sometimes God doesn’t remove the darkness right away. But He always gives you light for the next step.
So today, if you’re in a dark place—look for the light. Even a small flicker of His presence is proof He’s still near.
And maybe you can be that light for someone else, too.
Let’s pray:
“Jesus, thank You for being my light when everything else feels dark. Help me trust that You’re still with me, still shining, even when I can’t see clearly. Walk me through this season, one step at a time. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
