Struggling with questions about your faith and wondering if it's okay to doubt? In this episode, discover how honest doubt brought to Jesus isn't the opposite of faith, it's an invitation for Him to meet you where you are.

Have you ever had a question about your faith that you were afraid to say out loud?

Many of us were taught, directly or indirectly, that "good Christians don't doubt." So when hard questions creep in, about God's existence, about why He allows suffering, about whether any of this is really true, we bury them. We smile on Sunday and wrestle alone in the dark. Over time, that buried doubt doesn't go away; it festers into quiet cynicism or secret unbelief.

But what if doubt isn't the enemy of faith? What if it's actually an invitation? In this episode, we look at the story of Os Guinness, a man raised by missionaries who found himself unsure if Christianity was real or just inherited. Instead of hiding his questions, he pursued them honestly, and found that Jesus met him there. Through his story and the desperate prayer of a father in Mark 9, "I do believe, help me overcome my unbelief!", you'll see that honest doubt brought into the light can become the very place where your faith grows deeper.

BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING, YOU'LL DISCOVER:

  1. Why buried doubt tends to fester, while honest doubt brought to Jesus can strengthen your faith
  2. How the father in Mark 9 models a prayer you can pray when belief and unbelief are mixed together
  3. Practical ways to bring your real questions to God and to a trusted community without shame
  4. Doubt doesn't have to be the end of your faith story. It can be the beginning of a deeper one.

A young man, raised by missionaries in China, suddenly

Track 1 00:00:04

isn't sure any of it is true. Os Guinness grew up surrounded by

Track 1 00:00:09

faith. His parents served God in one of the hardest places on

Track 1 00:00:12

earth. But as he became an adult, deep intellectual doubts crept

Track 1 00:00:17

in. Was Christianity real, or just something he'd inherited?

Track 1 00:00:22

Was he believing because he'd examined the evidence, or simply

Track 1 00:00:25

because it's what his family did? Instead of burying those

Track 1 00:00:29

questions, he pursued them honestly, studying philosophy

Track 1 00:00:33

and facing the toughest critiques of faith head on. a

Track 1 00:00:37

world that often says, good Christians don't doubt, why

Track 1 00:00:40

would someone raised in ministry risk everything by pulling at

Track 1 00:00:44

the threads of his own belief?

Track 1 00:00:48

Welcome to Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. I'm Bart Leger. I've

Track 1 00:00:53

been a pastor for over 40 years, and even I struggle with

Track 1 00:00:58

something many of us have experienced, but few of us feel

Track 1 00:01:01

free to admit. Doubt. Mark 9, 19-24 tells the story of a

Track 1 00:01:08

desperate father who brings his demon-possessed son to Jesus.

Track 1 00:01:13

Listen to what happens. Jesus said to them, you faithless

Track 1 00:01:17

people, how long must I be with you? How long must I put up with

Track 1 00:01:22

you? Bring the boy to me. So they brought the boy. But when

Track 1 00:01:25

the evil spirit saw Jesus, it threw the child into a violent

Track 1 00:01:29

convulsion, and he fell to the ground, writhing and foaming in

Track 1 00:01:33

the mouth. How long has this been happening? Jesus asked the

Track 1 00:01:37

boy's father. He replied, since he was a little boy, the spirit

Track 1 00:01:42

often throws him into the fire or into the water, trying to

Track 1 00:01:45

kill him. Have mercy on us and help us if you can. What do you

Track 1 00:01:49

mean, if I can? Jesus asked. Anything is possible for a

Track 1 00:01:53

person who believes. The father instantly cried out, I do

Track 1 00:01:58

believe, but help me overcome my unbelief. That last line is one

Track 1 00:02:03

of the most honest prayers in all of Scripture. I do believe,

Track 1 00:02:06

but help me overcome my unbelief. This father wasn't pretending.

Track 1 00:02:11

He'd had faith enough to bring his son to Jesus, but he also

Track 1 00:02:14

had doubt. He said, help us if you can. And when Jesus

Track 1 00:02:19

challenged that, he didn't fake certainty. He admitted where he

Track 1 00:02:24

really was. Lord, I believe, but there's kind of some unbelief

Track 1 00:02:28

mixed in. Help me. And what did Jesus do? He didn't turn him

Track 1 00:02:32

away. And he didn't rebuke him for being honest. What he did

Track 1 00:02:36

was, he healed the boy. I believe that's good news for

Track 1 00:02:39

anyone who's ever felt their faith wobble a bit. You don't

Track 1 00:02:43

have to have perfect faith to come to Jesus. You just have to

Track 1 00:02:47

bring whatever faith you have and be honest about the rest.

Track 1 00:02:51

Doubt isn't always the opposite of faith. Sometimes, doubt is

Track 1 00:02:56

simply faith being stretched. You're asking hard questions

Track 1 00:03:00

because you want to know if what you believe is actually true.

Track 1 00:03:04

That kind of doubt brought to God instead of buried can become

Track 1 00:03:08

a doorway to deeper trust. I've heard parents tell their

Track 1 00:03:12

children. I've heard parents tell their children not to

Track 1 00:03:13

question their faith. Just believe. Or tell them, you

Track 1 00:03:17

shouldn't say stuff like that if they question anything about

Track 1 00:03:20

their faith. I believe that's the opposite of what they should

Track 1 00:03:23

be telling their children. Instead, they should be thankful

Track 1 00:03:27

their children are admitting they have questions or doubts.

Track 1 00:03:40

doubt tends to grow into cynicism or unbelief. But doubt

Track 1 00:03:46

that's brought into the light and laid before Jesus and

Track 1 00:03:49

wrestled with honestly? That kind of doubt can actually lead

Track 1 00:03:52

to stronger, more personal faith. Maybe you've had seasons where

Track 1 00:03:56

you've wondered, Is God really there? Does prayer actually do

Track 1 00:04:01

anything? Why does this teaching feel so hard to accept? Why do

Track 1 00:04:06

bad things happen if God is so good? See, those questions

Track 1 00:04:10

aren't signs that you've failed as a Christian. They're signs

Track 1 00:04:14

that you're human and that your faith is worth examining. In his

Track 1 00:04:18

book, God in the Dark, Oz Guinness writes that doubt

Track 1 00:04:22

handled honestly can actually strengthen faith, while doubt

Track 1 00:04:26

buried tends to fester. He found that when he brought his real

Track 1 00:04:30

questions to God and to Scripture, not looking for an

Track 1 00:04:33

excuse to leave, but genuinely seeking truth, Jesus met him

Track 1 00:04:38

there. Not with easy answers, but with deeper trust and

Track 1 00:04:43

relationship. Honest doubt brought into the light becomes

Track 1 00:04:47

an invitation for him to meet you exactly where you are. Maybe

Track 1 00:04:51

that's where you are today. You love God, but you have questions.

Track 1 00:04:54

You want to believe, but parts of your faith feel kind of shaky.

Track 1 00:04:59

You're not sure if it's okay to voice what you're really

Track 1 00:05:01

thinking. Here's what I want you to know. Jesus can handle your

Track 1 00:05:05

questions. He's not intimidated by your doubts, and he doesn't

Track 1 00:05:09

love you less when your faith wavers. He invites you to come

Track 1 00:05:12

to him just as you are and pray the same prayer that desperate

Track 1 00:05:15

father prayed. Lord, I do believe, but help me to overcome

Track 1 00:05:20

my unbelief. Here's today's challenge. If there's a question

Track 1 00:05:24

or a doubt you've been carrying in silence, bring it to God

Track 1 00:05:27

today. You don't have to have it all figured out. Just be honest.

Track 1 00:05:31

You might pray something like, Lord, I'm struggling with this.

Track 1 00:05:33

I want to trust you, but I have questions. Meet me here. Help my

Track 1 00:05:37

unbelief. And if it helps, find one trusted person. It could be

Track 1 00:05:43

a pastor, a mentor, or a mature friend, and share what you've

Track 1 00:05:47

been wrestling with. Doubt exposed to light and community

Track 1 00:05:51

often loses its power. Lord, thank you that you don't turn

Track 1 00:05:55

away from honest doubt. Thank you for that father in Mark 9

Track 1 00:05:58

who showed us it's okay to say, I believe, but help my unbelief.

Track 1 00:06:03

For anyone listening who's struggling with questions about

Track 1 00:06:05

faith, meet them right where they are and strengthen what's

Track 1 00:06:09

weak. Answer what needs answering and draw them closer

Track 1 00:06:12

to you through the wrestling. In Jesus' name, amen. If this

Track 1 00:06:17

episode encouraged you, would you share it with someone who

Track 1 00:06:19

might be quietly wrestling with doubt? Just send them the link

Track 1 00:06:23

from the show notes. They may need to hear that it's okay to

Track 1 00:06:26

bring their questions to Jesus. Thanks for joining me today on

Track 1 00:06:30

Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. Remember, honest doubt brought

Track 1 00:06:33

to Jesus isn't the opposite of faith. It's an invitation for

Track 1 00:06:37

Him to meet you where you are. Come back next time for more

Track 1 00:06:41

encouragement to help you live grounded in God's truth. Until

Track 1 00:06:44

then, God bless and have a great day.
