God still speaks, but not through noise or hurry. In this episode, discover how to recognize His voice through Scripture, stillness, and a quiet heart that’s learning to listen.

Ever wonder if God still speaks today?

He does, but often not in the way we expect.

In this episode, we look at what Dallas Willard called “a conversational relationship with God.” You’ll discover how His voice is found in Scripture and in the quiet moments when you slow down enough to listen.

Hearing God isn’t about chasing signs or mystical experiences; it’s about growing in familiarity with His character and learning to recognize the Shepherd’s voice that always aligns with His Word.

Main Scriptures:

John 10:27 – “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”

Isaiah 30:21 – “Your own ears will hear Him. Right behind you a voice will say, ‘This is the way you should go.’”

You’ll learn:

  • How to quiet the noise and make space to hear from God
  • Why Scripture is the primary way God speaks today
  • How the Holy Spirit helps us recognize and respond to His guidance
  • A simple way to practice stillness and listening prayer in your daily routine

Today’s Challenge:

Find five quiet minutes today.

Open your Bible to Psalm 23 or John 15, and before you start reading, pray: “Lord, speak to me through Your Word.”

Then sit in stillness for a few moments. You might be surprised by the peace that comes when you simply stop and listen.

00:00:01.235 --> 00:00:09.846
He often took a long pause in a room full of students and let the quiet do its work.

00:00:05.445 --> 00:00:14.006
Then Dallas Willard would say something simple and disarming.

00:00:09.846 --> 00:00:35.896
God will not compete for our attention. He believed hearing God isn't hokey or something only super-spiritual people claim, but that it's part of a steady, conversational friendship with Jesus, not just for crisis moments, but woven into ordinary days and anchored in Scripture, born out of silence and solitude. Could that really be true?

00:00:38.822 --> 00:00:54.014
Welcome to Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. I'm Bart Leger. You know, one of the hardest things for most of us is learning to be quiet long enough to actually hear from God. We pray, and we read, and then we move on.

00:00:51.241 --> 00:00:58.274
That's what I do more times than I would like. But the Bible says in John 10, 27, ...

00:01:02.984 --> 00:01:25.617
That means hearing God isn't a rare event. It's really just part of knowing Him. And Isaiah 30, 21 gives this beautiful promise. Your own ears will hear Him. Right behind you, a voice will say, This is the way you should go, whether to the right or to the left. That voice isn't loud or demanding. It's gentle.

00:01:26.067 --> 00:01:34.218
And the more time you spend with Him, it's familiar and it's faithful. God is still speaking.

00:01:29.757 --> 00:01:41.897
The question is, Are we quiet enough to listen? Here's how Willard framed it. The Bible is the primary voice of God to us.

00:01:38.078 --> 00:02:13.538
And the Spirit trains us to recognize the Lord's still, small voice as we become the kind of people who live before God, not just consult Him for decisions. He taught that hearing God grows inside a life of Scripture, prayer, and quiet attention to His presence. He called it a conversational relationship with God. Now, it's not magic. It's learning and listening. Listening to what He is telling us through His Word and through the leading and the prompting of the Holy Spirit.

00:02:09.837 --> 00:02:19.437
Not sure how this works? Well, start small. Open the Bible.

00:02:13.538 --> 00:02:26.578
Read it. And just sit still. Ask Jesus to guide you. And then, do the next right thing you sense in line with Scripture. Maybe today you feel busy and rushed.

00:02:27.068 --> 00:02:43.242
Your phone is buzzing and your schedule is packed. It feels like you're too busy to slow down. And my question Haven't heard from God in a while? You know, it's easy to think that God is silent. But really, He's just waiting for you to slow down long enough to hear Him.

00:02:39.723 --> 00:02:52.453
God speaks most clearly through His Word, but He also whispers direction and encouragement through His Spirit. He doesn't rush or shout. He invites in.

00:02:52.992 --> 00:03:03.742
Dallas Willard once said that learning to hear God is really about learning to live with God moment by moment when we're walking and just simply listening and responding in love.

00:03:04.543 --> 00:03:07.782
So, take comfort in this. You don't have to force God to speak.

00:03:07.853 --> 00:03:11.302
You just have to make space to listen. Here's today's challenge.

00:03:11.312 --> 00:03:34.742
Find five minutes today to sit in quiet stillness. That feels like a long time. Have you ever tried that? Just sitting still for five minutes? Open your Bible to a passage like Psalm 23 or John 15. Read slowly and then pause and ask, Lord, what are you saying to me right now?

00:03:30.223 --> 00:04:18.062
Don't worry about hearing a voice. Let His Word remind you that He knows you, He loves you, and that He's right there with you. Father, thank you that you still speak today. Forgive me for filling my life with so much noise that I miss your gentle whisper. Help me to slow down and open your Word and listen for your voice. Teach me to trust that you're leading me in the right path. In Jesus' name, amen. Thanks for joining me today on Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. Remember, God won't compete for your attention. Find a quiet place and let His voice comfort and guide you. Come back next time for more encouragement to help you live grounded in God's truth. Until then, God bless and have a great day.
