Feeling pressure to hide your faith and just blend in? In this episode, learn how Daniel’s quiet, consistent prayer life can give you courage to stand firm in a compromising culture.
Feeling pressure to hide your faith and just blend in? In this episode, learn how Daniel’s quiet, consistent prayer life can give you courage to stand firm in a compromising culture.
Have you ever been in a meeting, classroom, or group chat and felt that quiet pressure to stay silent about your faith so you don’t stand out?
Maybe you’re not denying Jesus outright, but you’ve learned how to “go along to get along,” laughing at what everyone laughs at, staying quiet when you know you should speak, and keeping your convictions safely tucked away. Over time, that kind of compromise can dull your courage and make your faith feel more like a private hobby than a living relationship.
In this episode, we look at Daniel’s choice to keep praying “as usual” even when it was illegal, and Coach Joe Kennedy’s quiet decision to keep kneeling at the 50‑yard line after games. You’ll see that their public courage didn’t come out of nowhere; it grew from small, consistent habits of obedience in private. And you’ll discover how building similar rhythms with God can strengthen you to stand firm when the pressure is on.
BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING, YOU’LL LEARN:
- How Daniel 6:10 reveals the connection between daily prayer and public courage
- Why hoping you’ll be bold “in the big moments” doesn’t work if you ignore God in the small, hidden ones
- Simple, practical ways to start an “as usual” habit with God that prepares you to stand firm at work, school, and online
- When pressure comes, you don’t have to invent courage on the spot, you can draw from a life that’s already rooted in quiet, consistent obedience.

Track 1 00:00:00
A high school football coach walks to the 50-yard line
Track 1 00:00:03
after a game, not to celebrate, but to kneel. For years, Joe
Track 1 00:00:07
Kennedy's quiet habit was the same. When the final whistle
Track 1 00:00:11
blew, he'd step out to midfield, bow his head, and pray a brief,
Track 1 00:00:15
thank you, Lord, and a request for protection over his players.
Track 1 00:00:19
It started as a private rhythm between him and God. Over time,
Track 1 00:00:23
a few students chose to join him. Then, one season, the school
Track 1 00:00:28
district told him to stop praying on the field. Headlines
Track 1 00:00:31
followed, and the pressure mounted. Suddenly, this small,
Track 1 00:00:35
ordinary act put his job on the line. In that moment, why would
Track 1 00:00:39
a coach keep doing what he's always done, kneel and pray,
Track 1 00:00:42
when it could cost him his career?
Track 1 00:00:47
Welcome to Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. I'm Bart Leger, and
Track 1 00:00:52
I've been a pastor for over 40 years. In that time, I've seen
Track 1 00:00:56
our culture publicly move farther and farther away from
Track 1 00:00:59
God, making it more difficult to stand firm in our faith. In
Track 1 00:01:04
current culture, we'd rather you blend in than stand out for your
Track 1 00:01:07
faith. Maybe you felt that pressure. At work, you're
Track 1 00:01:11
expected to keep your faith completely private. At school,
Track 1 00:01:14
speaking up for what you believe could cost you friends, or maybe
Track 1 00:01:17
opportunities. Online, it can feel safer to stay than to be
Track 1 00:01:22
labeled or misunderstood. The message is clear. Believe what
Track 1 00:01:25
you want, but don't bring it here. Daniel chapter 6, verse 10
Track 1 00:01:30
says, But when Daniel learned that the law had been signed, he
Track 1 00:01:35
went home and knelt down as usual in his upstairs room, with
Track 1 00:01:38
its windows open toward Jerusalem. He prayed three times
Track 1 00:01:42
a day, just as he had always done, giving thanks to his God.
Track 1 00:01:46
That, as usual, is huge. A law had been passed that said no one
Track 1 00:01:52
could pray to anyone except the king for 30 days. This wasn't a
Track 1 00:01:56
minor policy change. What it was, was a trap. It was designed
Track 1 00:02:01
specifically to target Daniel's faith. The stakes were life or
Track 1 00:02:05
death. A lion's den. Not a bad performance review. And what
Track 1 00:02:09
does Daniel do? He doesn't panic. And he doesn't make a speech.
Track 1 00:02:13
And he doesn't go on a campaign.
Track 1 00:02:18
He kneels. He opens the window toward Jerusalem. And he prays,
Track 1 00:02:22
just as he had always done. Daniel's courage in that public
Track 1 00:02:26
crisis didn't come out of nowhere. It was a natural
Track 1 00:02:29
overflow of a long pattern of private obedience. Long before
Track 1 00:02:33
anyone was watching, long before there were any laws about it,
Track 1 00:02:36
Daniel had built a habit of seeking God three times a day.
Track 1 00:02:40
So, when the pressure came, he didn't have to invent a new
Track 1 00:02:44
response. He just stayed faithful to the rhythm he
Track 1 00:02:46
already had with God. We sometimes imagine that standing
Track 1 00:02:51
firm looks like one big, heroic moment. But most of the time,
Track 1 00:02:54
it's built on a thousand small yeses that no one sees. You and
Track 1 00:02:59
I may never face a lion's den. But we face our own kind of
Track 1 00:03:03
pressure. You're in a meeting where dishonesty is normal and
Track 1 00:03:06
telling the truth might cost you. Or you're in a group where
Track 1 00:03:09
gossip or crude jokes are the norm. And speaking up and not
Track 1 00:03:14
laughing makes you stand out. Or you're asked to compromise your
Track 1 00:03:18
convictions just this once, keep the peace or get ahead. In these
Track 1 00:03:23
moments, what you've been doing as usual matters. If you've been
Track 1 00:03:27
walking with the Lord in private and opening his word and talking
Track 1 00:03:30
with him honestly, That quiet, consistent obedience gives you
Track 1 00:03:35
the strength when the spotlight suddenly swings your way. On the
Track 1 00:03:39
other hand, if we ignore God in private and hope we'll suddenly
Track 1 00:03:42
be bold in public, we're putting a weight on our faith that it
Track 1 00:03:46
was never meant to carry. Daniel didn't become courageous because
Track 1 00:03:50
the law changed. The law revealed the courage that was
Track 1 00:03:53
already there from years of walking with God. Now back to
Track 1 00:03:56
Coach Kennedy. He didn't stage a protest. He simply kept his
Track 1 00:04:01
post-game habit as usual, like Daniel in Daniel 610, walking to
Track 1 00:04:06
midfield and thanking God.
Track 1 00:04:13
In 2022, the U. S. Supreme Court ruled in his favor, saying the
Track 1 00:04:19
school had violated his rights by punishing him for that brief,
Track 1 00:04:22
quiet prayer. Kennedy's courage in public came from a long
Track 1 00:04:26
pattern of small obedience in private.
Track 1 00:04:35
Now, you may not be on a football field or in Babylon,
Track 1 00:04:40
but the principle is the same. The question isn't just, will I
Track 1 00:04:44
stand when the big moment comes? It's, what am I doing as usual
Track 1 00:04:48
right now? Am I meeting with God regularly, even briefly, so that
Track 1 00:04:52
his voice is louder than the culture's? Am I practicing small
Track 1 00:04:56
acts of obedience when no one's watching, so my heart is always
Track 1 00:05:00
tuned to say yes to him? Am I asking God for courage now in
Track 1 00:05:03
the daily stuff, so I'm not surprised when I need it later?
Track 1 00:05:07
Here's today's challenge. Think about one environment where you
Track 1 00:05:11
feel the most pressure to compromise. Maybe it's your
Track 1 00:05:13
workplace, your school, your team, or your online spaces. Ask
Track 1 00:05:18
yourself, what's one small faithful habit I can begin or
Track 1 00:05:22
continue in private that will help me stand firm there? It
Track 1 00:05:26
might be praying over your day before you open your email. It
Track 1 00:05:29
might be reading a short passage of scripture in your car before
Track 1 00:05:32
you walk into work or class. It might be asking God each morning,
Track 1 00:05:36
Lord, help me to honor you with my words today. Write that one
Track 1 00:05:41
habit down and this week, practice it as usual. Let God
Track 1 00:05:44
use those quiet, consistent moments to build courage in you.
Track 1 00:05:47
Lord, you know the pressure we feel to blend in, to stay quiet,
Track 1 00:05:51
or to compromise. Thank you for the example of Daniel and for
Track 1 00:05:56
modern examples like Coach Kennedy, who shows us what a
Track 1 00:05:59
quiet faithfulness looks like. Help us to seek you in private
Track 1 00:06:03
so we can stand for you in public. Give us courage to obey
Track 1 00:06:06
you and trust you with the results. In Jesus' name, amen.
