When You Feel Called to Something but Afraid to Fail

When You Feel Called to Something but Afraid to Fail

Key Takeaways

  • Many gifted Christians never pursue the calling God places before them simply because they are afraid it will not work out.
  • When we make a list of reasons why we are unqualified for a task, most of those self-assessments are actually true.
  • Drawing inspiration from Jack Williamson, who stuttered his entire life yet answered the call to preach, demonstrates that God does not always remove our weaknesses before sending us.
  • In Exodus 4, God responds to Moses's objections about his speech not by denying the limitation, but by asking who made the human mouth.
  • The biblical order of calling requires sending first, with the necessary help arriving while we are in the middle of speaking and acting.
  • God does not always remove the exact thing we fear; instead, He sends us out with it and shows up powerfully in the doing.
  • Instead of waiting to be completely fixed or fully qualified, you can take the next small step and let God prove Himself in your obedience.

You have an idea for a business or a ministry, and every time you get close to starting, the list of reasons shows up. Learn how God answered Moses when he disqualified himself, and what the order of the sending tells you.

Some of the most gifted Christians never do the thing God has put in front of them, because they're afraid it won't work. You have an idea for a business, or a ministry you could start, and you've had it for a while. Every time you get close to beginning, the list shows up. You don't have the training, and somebody else would do it better anyway. Here's what makes that list so convincing. Most of what's on it is true. You probably aren't the most qualified person for the job, and you know it.

This episode opens with Jack Williamson, who has stuttered since he was a boy. He knows what it is to get stuck on a word while a room waits, and to block so badly on the phone that he can't get his own name out. As a kid, the taunting taught him to dread being asked to speak. Then he sensed God calling him to preach. Of all the things to ask a man who stutters, God was pointing him toward a pulpit, week after week, in front of everyone. Every reason to say no was right there in his own mouth.

Moses had the same objection. Exodus 4:10-12 records him pleading with God that he was not good with words, that he got tongue-tied and his words got tangled. He is eighty years old, keeping sheep on the back side of a desert, and God is telling him to go stand in front of Pharaoh and talk. Then look at God's answer. He never disputes the assessment. He asks a question back instead: "Who makes a person's mouth?" That question moves the whole conversation off of Moses and onto God.

God doesn't tell Moses he's wrong about himself. He tells him the mouth in question belongs to its Maker. The limitation Moses is holding up as a reason to stay put is a thing God made on purpose. Then comes the instruction. Now go. I will be with you as you speak, and I will instruct you in what to say. Notice the order of it. The sending comes first, and the help arrives while he is talking. There's no repair job in between.

So the question in front of you is the same one. Who made you. God is asking for obedience, and He already knows what He can do with you and His help together. Take the next small step and let that be all you take this week. Bart shares his own version of this, the list he had ready when he first sensed God calling him to preach. Jack took the same road. He enrolled in seminary and started preaching, stutter and all. He did not wait to be fixed first.

BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING, YOU'LL DISCOVER:

How God answered Moses without ever disputing what Moses said about himself Why the order of the sending and the help matters for your own calling One question to ask about the reason you haven't started

God does not always remove the thing you are afraid of. Sometimes He sends you out with it and shows up in the doing. Take the next small step, and let Him prove Himself there.

Speak:

the one thing that disqualified him in his own eyes was the

Speak:

exact thing standing between him and what God was asking. We'll

Speak:

come back to what Jack did with that, but first...

Speak:

Welcome to Daily Devotions for Busy I'm Bart Leger. When I

Speak:

first sensed God calling me to preach, I had my list ready. I

Speak:

wasn't a public speaker, and I didn't come from a family of

Speak:

preachers. Mostly, I was afraid I'd stand up there with nothing

Speak:

to say, and the people would figure out I had no business

Speak:

being in that pulpit. I went anyway, and I've been at it a

Speak:

long time now, and I still feel inadequate. I realized I just

Speak:

need to trust the Holy Spirit and lean into his power. Some of

Speak:

the most gifted Christians I know never do the thing God has

Speak:

put in front of them because they're afraid it won't work.

Speak:

You have an idea for a business or a ministry you could start.

Speak:

You've had it for a while, and every time you get close to

Speak:

beginning, the list in your head shows up. You don't have the

Speak:

training, and somebody else would do it better anyway.

Speak:

Here's what makes that list so convincing. Most of what's on it

Speak:

is probably true, and you probably aren't the most

Speak:

qualified person for their job, and you know it. Moses had a

Speak:

list too, and his was a good It's in Exodus 4, verses 10-12.

Speak:

But Moses pleaded with the Lord, O Lord, I'm not very good with

Speak:

words. I have never been, and I'm not now, even though you

Speak:

have spoken to me. I get tongue-tied, and my words get

Speak:

tangled. Then the Lord asked Moses, Who makes a person's

Speak:

mouth? Who decides whether people speak or do not speak,

Speak:

hear or do not hear, see or do not see? Is it not I, the Lord?

Speak:

Now go, I will be with you as you speak, and I will instruct

Speak:

you in what to say. Look at what Moses leads with. I'm not very

Speak:

good with words. I never have been. He's reporting something

Speak:

he believes about himself, and he's been living with it a long

Speak:

while. He's 80 years old, keeping sheep on the backside of

Speak:

a desert, and God is telling him to go stand in front of Pharaoh

Speak:

and talk. Then, look at God's answer. He never disputes the

Speak:

assessment that Moses had of himself. He asks the question

Speak:

back instead. Who makes a person's mouth? The question

Speak:

moves the whole conversation off of Moses and on to God. God

Speak:

doesn't tell Moses he's wrong about himself. He tells him the

Speak:

mouth in question belongs to its maker. a thing God made on

Speak:

purpose, and God doesn't make mistakes. Then comes the

Speak:

instruction. Now go. I will be with you as you speak, and I

Speak:

will instruct you in what to say. Notice what comes first. The

Speak:

sending comes first, and the help arrives while he's talking.

Speak:

You trust. You do. Then the help comes. So the question in front

Speak:

of you is the same one. Who made you? God is asking for obedience,

Speak:

and he already knows what he can do with you and his help

Speak:

together. What's been running through your head is not always

Speak:

about the full picture. Take the next small step. Then trust God

Speak:

to do the rest. Make the one phone call. Write the first page.

Speak:

Let him prove himself in the doing, because that's usually

Speak:

where he does it. Jack went anyway. He enrolled in seminary

Speak:

and started preaching, stutter and all. He didn't wait to be

Speak:

fixed first. He leaned on the God who made his mouth, and he

Speak:

kept stepping into the pulpit Sunday after Sunday. Forty years

Speak:

later, he's still preaching. He came to see his stutter as the

Speak:

way Moses could have seen his, that God didn't make a mistake

Speak:

when he called him, and that the weakness he wanted gone was part

Speak:

of the plan all along. God doesn't always remove the thing

Speak:

you're afraid of. Sometimes, he sends you out with it and shows

Speak:

up in the doing. Look at how Jack's story compares to Moses.

Speak:

Two men with the same objection, and it came down to the same

Speak:

body part both times. Both of them were right about themselves,

Speak:

and in neither case did God fix the thing before he sent the man

Speak:

out. Jack enrolled and stepped into a pulpit, and he found out

Speak:

what God could do with a man who showed up stuttering. Four

Speak:

decades of Sunday is a pretty long answer to a question he

Speak:

asked once. Here's today's challenge. Write down the thing

Speak:

you believe God has put in front of you. It only needs to be one

Speak:

sentence. No hedging. Then, write down the reason you

Speak:

haven't started it, and be straight about what that reason

Speak:

is. Now, look at that reason, and ask God what he asked Moses.

Speak:

Who made this? If the limitation you listed is something he made

Speak:

or allowed in your life, then he knew all about it when he put

Speak:

the thing in front of you. And then, do one piece of it today.

Speak:

Something that takes you maybe under an hour. Not the whole

Speak:

staircase, just the first step. Father, you asked Moses who made

Speak:

his mouth, and you already knew the answer when you asked it.

Speak:

Thank you that you call people who show up with a list of

Speak:

reasons they shouldn't. for everybody listening who has been

Speak:

holding an idea for years because they were afraid it

Speak:

won't work, settle them enough to take one small step this week.

Speak:

Go with them while they take it, the way you promised Moses you

Speak:

would. In Jesus' name, amen. This podcast runs on the

Speak:

Speak:

with the same mouth he had been complaining about. Take the next

Speak:

step and let him show up in the doing. Come back next time for

Until then, God bless and have a great day.

Why God Never Removes Your Insecurities Before Calling You to Step Out

When God calls us to a new ministry, business, or creative endeavor, we instinctively look for a miracle of elimination. We expect our fears, weaknesses, and inadequacies to vanish before we take the first step. However, biblical and modern examples…
