Struggling with secret habits and temptations no one else knows about? In this episode, learn how God faithfully provides a way out of every temptation, and why you never have to fight your private battles alone.
Have you ever felt like your biggest spiritual battles happen when no one is watching?
It's easy to look put together in public, at church, at work, with friends, while quietly wrestling with things you've never told anyone. Over time, those secret struggles start to feel heavier, and you wonder if you're the only one fighting this hard or if God has somehow run out of patience with you.
In this episode, we look at 1 Corinthians 10:13 and the story of Billy Graham's "Modesto Manifesto," a set of guardrails he and his team created in 1948 to protect themselves from the temptations that had destroyed other ministers. You'll see that God doesn't just forgive sin after the fact; He actively provides a way out before you fall, if you're willing to look for the door and walk through it.
BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING, YOU'LL LEARN:
- Why the temptations you face are not unique to you, and how that truth brings both comfort and hope
- How God's "way out" often shows up in practical boundaries and humble choices made long before the heat of the moment
- The power of bringing your secret struggle into the light with one safe, trusted person

Track 1 00:00:00
A young evangelist is suddenly in the spotlight. Billy
Track 1 00:00:04
Graham is filling tents and auditoriums and traveling from
Track 1 00:00:08
city to city. He's staying in hotels surrounded by attention
Track 1 00:00:12
and opportunity and all the quiet temptations that come with
Track 1 00:00:16
it. In 1948, he and his team stopped in Modesto, California,
Track 1 00:00:23
and while they were there, they made a list of what had taken
Track 1 00:00:26
other preachers down—money, sex, and pride. Then, they do
Track 1 00:00:32
something unusual for ambitious young men. They decide to tie
Track 1 00:00:37
their own hands with strict boundaries. No being alone with
Track 1 00:00:40
women who aren't their wives. No fuzzy finances. No exaggerating
Track 1 00:00:45
numbers. In a world that says, trust yourself, you're strong
Track 1 00:00:49
enough, why would they choose to limit themselves before anything
Track 1 00:00:53
had even gone wrong?
Track 1 00:00:57
Welcome to Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. I am Bart Leger, and
Track 1 00:01:02
today we're talking about those moments when no one is watching,
Track 1 00:01:06
when no one would know what you clicked on, what you poured,
Track 1 00:01:10
what you bought, or what you hid. Jesus knows all about
Track 1 00:01:15
temptations, and so did the Apostle Paul. In 1 Corinthians
Track 1 00:01:19
10.13, he gives us a promise concerning temptations. The
Track 1 00:01:23
temptations in your life are no different from what others
Track 1 00:01:27
experience, and God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation
Track 1 00:01:31
to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will
Track 1 00:01:35
show you a way out so that you can endure. There's a whole lot
Track 1 00:01:39
of comfort packed into that verse, and I believe a lot of
Track 1 00:01:43
challenge, too. First, the comfort. The temptations in your
Track 1 00:01:47
life are no different from what others experience. That means
Track 1 00:01:51
you're not unusual. Whatever you're wrestling with in secret
Track 1 00:01:55
could be anger, lust, greed, jealousy, maybe addiction, or
Track 1 00:02:01
bitterness. You're not the first person to face it, and you're
Track 1 00:02:05
not disqualified from God's help because your struggle feels
Track 1 00:02:08
shameful. Secondly, the promise. God is faithful. He will not
Track 1 00:02:13
allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. Now, that
Track 1 00:02:16
doesn't mean that the temptation won't feel strong. It means God
Track 1 00:02:20
has already measured it against what he knows you can handle
Track 1 00:02:24
with his help. He's not setting you up to fail. Third, the
Track 1 00:02:29
provision. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so
Track 1 00:02:33
that you can endure. Notice, he doesn't say he'll remove the
Track 1 00:02:37
temptation. He says he'll show you a way out. There's always a
Track 1 00:02:41
door, but you have to be looking for it, and you have to be
Track 1 00:02:45
willing to walk through it. Here's where it gets practical.
Track 1 00:02:49
The way out usually doesn't appear in the heat of the moment.
Track 1 00:02:53
At least, we don't notice it, maybe. It appears before the
Track 1 00:02:57
moment, in the boundaries you set, in the accountability you
Track 1 00:03:01
invite, and the habits you build when no one's watching. That's
Track 1 00:03:05
exactly what Billy Graham and his team understood in Modesto.
Track 1 00:03:08
Instead of waiting for a crisis, Billy Graham and his team
Track 1 00:03:13
treated 1 Corinthians 10.13 as true, assuming temptations would
Track 1 00:03:17
come, and seeing wise guardrails as God's way out. Those private
Track 1 00:03:24
decisions in Modesto helped keep Graham's public ministry clean
Track 1 00:03:27
for decades. The real battle wasn't on the stage. It was in
Track 1 00:03:32
hotel hallways, closed-door meetings, and financial reports
Track 1 00:03:36
where no one was watching. His life reminds us that God is
Track 1 00:03:40
faithful to provide an exit in every temptation. But most of
Track 1 00:03:43
the time, that exit looks like humble, practical choices we
Track 1 00:03:48
make long before the moment hits. So, what does that look like for
Track 1 00:03:52
you? Maybe the way out is putting your phone in another
Track 1 00:03:55
room at night so you're not tempted to scroll into dark
Track 1 00:03:58
places. Maybe it's setting up an accountability app or telling
Track 1 00:04:02
one trusted friend about your struggle. Maybe it's not keeping
Track 1 00:04:07
certain things in the house. Maybe it's leaving a
Track 1 00:04:10
conversation, a website, or a relationship before it crosses a
Track 1 00:04:15
line. These aren't signs of weakness. I believe they're
Track 1 00:04:20
signs of true wisdom. You're not trusting yourself too much.
Track 1 00:04:23
You're trusting God enough to take the exit He provides. And
Track 1 00:04:27
here's something else. You don't have to fight alone. Part of
Track 1 00:04:31
God's way out is often other people. James 5.16 says, Confess
Track 1 00:04:36
your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may
Track 1 00:04:39
be healed. And there's power in bringing your secret struggle
Track 1 00:04:44
into the light with one safe person. Because sin loves the
Track 1 00:04:48
dark, but it loses power when it's exposed to the light.
Track 1 00:04:52
Here's today's challenge. Think about one area where you're
Track 1 00:04:55
fighting a private battle. Something you haven't told
Track 1 00:04:58
anyone. Something that tends to pull you down when no one's
Track 1 00:05:01
watching. And today, do two things. First, ask God to show
Track 1 00:05:06
you one practical way out. One boundary. One change. Or one
Track 1 00:05:12
step you can take before the temptation hits. Write it down
Track 1 00:05:15
if you need to. And then secondly, consider telling one
Track 1 00:05:19
trusted person. Not the whole world. Just one safe friend.
Track 1 00:05:22
Maybe mentor or pastor who can pray for you and check in with
Track 1 00:05:26
you. You don't have to be perfect to be forgiven. But you
Track 1 00:05:30
also don't have to stay stuck. God is faithful. He will show
Track 1 00:05:34
you a way out. Lord, you know our secret battles. The ones
Track 1 00:05:40
that no one else sees. Thank you that your word says temptation
Track 1 00:05:44
is common and that you're faithful. Help us take the exits
Track 1 00:05:47
you provide. The boundaries. The accountability. The humble
Track 1 00:05:50
choices that protect our hearts. Give us the courage to bring our
Track 1 00:05:54
struggles into the light and trust you with the outcome. In
Track 1 00:05:57
Jesus' name, amen. If this episode encouraged you, would
Track 1 00:06:02
you consider sharing it with someone who might be fighting
Track 1 00:06:04
their own private battle? Just send them the link from the show
Track 1 00:06:07
notes. They may need this reminder today. Thanks for
Track 1 00:06:11
joining me today on Daily Devotions for Busy Lives.
Track 1 00:06:15
Remember, God always provides a way out of temptation. You never
Track 1 00:06:19
have to fight your private battles alone. Come back next
Track 1 00:06:23
time for more encouragement to help you live grounded in God's
Track 1 00:06:26
truth. Until then, God bless and have a great day.
