You’ve been staring at that unfinished project for weeks. You’ve avoided the gym… again. You keep telling yourself you’ll pray more—when life calms down. But it never does. And now you’re stuck in the guilt of not beginning, and afraid it’s too late to try.

Welcome to Daily Devotions for Busy Lives, your 3-minute dose of truth and encouragement from God’s Word to help you reset your heart and refocus your day.

Today’s verse comes from Zechariah 4:10:

“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin…” (NLT)

Let that sink in: God rejoices not in the finish line, but in the first step.

It’s easy to believe the lie that if something doesn’t start big, loud, or perfect—it’s not worth starting at all. But that’s not how God works. He’s not waiting on your highlight reel. He rejoices in your small beginning.

This verse was originally spoken when God’s people were rebuilding the temple. The work was slow, the resources were limited, and the people felt discouraged. But God told them not to look down on small starts—because He was in it.

That applies to your life too.

Maybe it’s a relationship that needs mending. Maybe it’s your spiritual life that’s gone cold. Or maybe it’s your health, your mental well-being, or a dream you’ve been afraid to chase. You don’t need a flawless plan. You just need to start. Today. Where you are.

God doesn’t celebrate perfection. He celebrates obedience. He doesn’t wait for things to get big to bless them—He rejoices when you begin.

So what’s your small beginning today? Is it a 10-minute walk? A 5-minute prayer? A single text to reconnect with someone? Start where you are. God’s already there.

“Father, thank You for not waiting on my perfection. Help me to trust You with the small things. Give me the courage to begin, even when it feels too late. I believe You rejoice when I take the first step. Amen.”

Thanks for joining me today on Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. Remember—God rejoices in your first step. Come back tomorrow for more encouragement to help you live grounded in God’s truth.
