What do you do when your own thoughts turn against you?

For some, it’s the whisper of failure. For others, it’s the heavy voice of shame or insecurity. Left unchecked, those thoughts can steal our peace and derail our faith.

In today’s devotion, you’ll hear how NFL quarterback Brock Purdy chose to anchor his identity in Jesus instead of performance, pointing to Christ whether in victory or defeat. His example reminds us that the battle is in the mind, and God’s Word gives us the power to win it.

Main Scripture:

2 Corinthians 10:5 – “We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.”

By the end of this episode, you’ll discover:

  • Why you don’t have to believe every thought that runs through your mind
  • How to replace lies with the truth of Scripture
  • A simple practice to guard your mind and walk in peace

Today’s Challenge:

Write down one toxic thought you’ve been battling. Then find a verse of Scripture that speaks God’s truth into it. When the lie shows up, say that verse out loud.

He may have finally arrived, but his nickname stuck, Mr. Irrelevant. He was the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

00:00:09.358 --> 00:00:16.099
Every Sunday, those thoughts threaten to come back to haunt him. Not supposed to be here.

00:00:12.398 --> 00:00:27.939
When a mistake happens, the voice in his head says, see, you're not enough. That's the pressure Brock Purdy, quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers, lives under every Sunday.

00:00:23.298 --> 00:00:33.238
So, when the stage got brightest and the noise got loudest, what script did he choose to run in his mind?

00:00:36.329 --> 00:00:49.039
Welcome to Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. I'm Bart Leger, and for over 40 years as a pastor, I've seen how much our thought life shapes our spiritual life.

00:00:44.759 --> 00:01:24.150
Today, we're talking about what to do when your mind won't stop whispering lies. He says, "We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ." So what script did Brock Purdy choose? He chose the truth of God's Word over the lies of performance. Purdy says,"My identity is in Jesus." And he points to Christ whether the scoreboard smiles or its stings.

00:01:19.010 --> 00:01:32.930
Reporters ask about his calm, and he talks about praying on the sideline and giving glory to God. After the Super Bowl loss, he said he was hurting, but that Jesus Christ is my rock.

00:01:35.100 --> 00:02:37.550
That's a quarterback taking fearful accusing thoughts captive and replacing them with scripture-shaped truth about who he is in Jesus Christ. Here's why this matters for us. We all have that accusing voice in our head. It says, "You're not good enough. You'll never change. Or you'll always be stuck." The battlefield isn't out there somewhere. It's in here in our thoughts. And Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians that we don't have to accept every thought that runs across our mind. We can stop it, measure it against the truth of Christ, and replace it with scripture. That's what it says. Think about it this way: If you leave the door to your house wide open, anything can wander in. But if you guard the door, you decide what stays and what leaves. God gives us that same authority over our thought life. And when we start replacing lies with truth, then peace can follow. Instead of,"I'm not enough," we can say, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Philippians

00:02:37.550 --> 00:03:34.997
13. Instead of, "I'm unlovable," we can say, "Nothing can separate me from the love of God." Romans 8: 38-39. Today, write down one toxic thought you've been battling. Then find one scripture that speaks God's truth into it. Say it out loud when the lie shows up. And let God's word become the louder voice in your head. Lord, thank you that your word is alive and powerful. Teach me to guard my thoughts and to reject lies. And also, help me to anchor my mind in the truth of who I am in Christ. Help me to live today with a renewed mind focused on you. In Jesus' name, amen. could I ask a favor of you?
