Struggling to stay connected to church because of hurt, busyness, or disappointment with people? In this episode, discover why God designed you for community, imperfect Christ-followers sharpening and encouraging one another, and why disconnection isn't the solution.
Struggling to stay connected to church because of hurt, busyness, or disappointment with people? In this episode, discover why God designed you for community, imperfect Christ-followers sharpening and encouraging one another, and why disconnection isn't the solution.
Have you ever felt like going to church was more of an obligation than a joy?
Maybe you've been hurt by someone in leadership. Maybe you've experienced gossip, judgment, or hypocrisy in a congregation. Maybe you've shown up week after week and felt invisible. Or maybe life just got busy and you drifted without even realizing it. Whatever the reason, church started feeling like a chore instead of a community.
In this episode, we look at Jefferson Bethke, whose viral video "Why I Hate Religion But Love Jesus" gave voice to millions who felt disillusioned with institutional Christianity. He was frustrated with a church culture that seemed more about appearance than authenticity. But in the years that followed, Bethke shifted his message. He realized that rejecting the church entirely wasn't the answer. In his book It's Not What You Think, he describes learning to love the messy, imperfect community of Christ-followers because that's exactly what Jesus designed.
Through his story and Hebrews 10:24–25, you'll see that the command to "not neglect our meeting together" wasn't written for people who loved every Sunday, it was written for people tempted to quit. God designed you for community. Disillusionment is common, but disconnection isn't the solution. Finding your place in messy, grace-filled community is.
BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING, YOU'LL DISCOVER:
- Why the answer to disappointment with the church isn't to abandon the church
- How Hebrews 10:24–25 calls us to motivate and encourage one another, not just attend a service
- Practical ways to reconnect with community if you've drifted or been hurt
The church isn't a museum for saints, it's a hospital for the broken. And you can't heal alone.

A spoken word video goes viral, and suddenly
Track 1 00:00:04
millions are nodding along. In 2012, Jefferson Bethke became
Track 1 00:00:09
famous almost overnight when his video, Why I Hate Religion, But
Track 1 00:00:12
Love Jesus, exploded on YouTube. It resonated with people who
Track 1 00:00:16
felt disillusioned with institutional Christianity, the
Track 1 00:00:20
hypocrisy, the performance, the rules without relationship.
Track 1 00:00:24
himself was frustrated with a church culture that seemed more
Track 1 00:00:28
about appearance than authenticity. He gave voice to
Track 1 00:00:31
what so many were feeling. Maybe the church was the problem. When
Track 1 00:00:35
you've been hurt, disappointed, or just bored by organized
Track 1 00:00:39
religion, why would anyone bother staying connected to a
Track 1 00:00:42
local church?
Track 1 00:00:46
Welcome to Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. I'm Bart Leger, and
Track 1 00:00:51
today we're talking about something many Christians
Track 1 00:00:53
quietly wrestle with, when church feels like a chore.
Track 1 00:00:57
Hebrews 10, verses 24 and 25 says, Let us think of ways to
Track 1 00:01:03
motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us
Track 1 00:01:07
not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage
Track 1 00:01:11
one another, especially now that the day of His return is drawing
Track 1 00:01:14
near. Notice the command isn't attend a service. It's don't
Track 1 00:01:19
neglect meeting together. And the purpose isn't just to check
Track 1 00:01:22
a religious box. It's to motivate one another, to
Track 1 00:01:26
encourage one another, and to stir one another up to love and
Track 1 00:01:30
good works. Church was never meant to be a spectator sport.
Track 1 00:01:33
It was meant to be a family. But let's be honest, families are
Track 1 00:01:38
messy. And so is church. Maybe you've been hurt by someone in
Track 1 00:01:42
leadership. Maybe you've experienced gossip, judgment, or
Track 1 00:01:46
hypocrisy in a congregation. Maybe you've shown up week after
Track 1 00:01:50
week and felt invisible. Maybe you're just tired, tired of
Track 1 00:01:53
programs, tired of performance, and tired of pretending
Track 1 00:01:56
everything's fine when it's not. Those feelings are real, and
Track 1 00:02:01
they're more common than you might think. But here's the
Track 1 00:02:04
tension. The answer to disappointment with the church
Track 1 00:02:08
isn't to abandon the church. It's to find your place in messy,
Track 1 00:02:13
grace-filled community anyway. Why? Because that's exactly what
Track 1 00:02:17
Jesus designed. The church isn't a museum for saints. It's a
Track 1 00:02:21
hospital for sinners. It's a collection of broken people who
Track 1 00:02:24
are being put back together by the same grace. And if you wait
Track 1 00:02:28
for a perfect church, you'll never find one, because the
Track 1 00:02:30
moment you join, it won't be perfect anymore. The writer of
Track 1 00:02:34
Hebrews knew people would be tempted to drift. That's why he
Track 1 00:02:37
says don't neglect our meeting together, as some people do.
Track 1 00:02:40
This wasn't written for people who loved every Sunday. It was
Track 1 00:02:43
written for people who attempted to quit. And the reason he gives
Track 1 00:02:46
is significant, especially now that the day of his return is
Track 1 00:02:49
drawing near. In other words, the closer we get to the end,
Track 1 00:02:53
the more we need each other. You weren't meant to walk this road
Track 1 00:02:57
of life alone. There's something that happens in community that
Track 1 00:03:01
can't happen in isolation. As the Bible says, iron sharpens
Track 1 00:03:05
iron. Burdens get shared and blind spots get exposed. You
Track 1 00:03:10
learn to forgive and you learn to be forgiven. You're reminded
Track 1 00:03:13
that you're not the only one who's struggling. And you get to
Track 1 00:03:17
be the hands and feet of Jesus to someone else who's barely
Track 1 00:03:20
hanging on. In the years since that viral video, Jefferson
Track 1 00:03:24
shifted his message. He realized that rejecting the church
Track 1 00:03:28
entirely wasn't the answer. In his book, It's Not What You
Track 1 00:03:31
Think, he describes learning to love the messy, imperfect
Track 1 00:03:35
community of Christ followers, because that's exactly what
Track 1 00:03:38
Jesus designed. He said the church isn't supposed to be a
Track 1 00:03:41
collection of perfect people. It's a hospital for the broken,
Track 1 00:03:44
and you can't heal alone. Disillusionment is common, but
Track 1 00:03:49
disconnection isn't the solution. Finding your place in messy,
Track 1 00:03:53
grace-filled community is. Maybe you've stepped back from church
Track 1 00:03:56
for a while. Maybe you've been hurt and you're not sure you can
Track 1 00:04:00
trust again. Maybe you've just gotten busy and drifted away
Track 1 00:04:04
without even realizing it. Here's my encouragement. Don't
Track 1 00:04:07
give up on the body of Christ. Give it another chance. Find a
Track 1 00:04:10
community where the gospel is preached, where grace is real,
Track 1 00:04:13
and where imperfect people are learning how to love one another.
Track 1 00:04:16
It won't be perfect, but it might be exactly what you need.
Track 1 00:04:20
Here's today's challenge. If you've drifted from community,
Track 1 00:04:24
just take one step back this week. Maybe it's attending a
Track 1 00:04:28
service. Maybe it's joining a small group. It might be
Track 1 00:04:32
reaching out to one person from your church and saying, I've
Track 1 00:04:34
been struggling to stay connected. And if you're already
Track 1 00:04:38
connected, think of one person who might be drifting and reach
Track 1 00:04:41
out to encourage them. That's what Hebrews 10 is all about,
Track 1 00:04:45
motivating one another toward love and good works. Lord, we
Track 1 00:04:48
confess that church hasn't always been easy. Some of us
Track 1 00:04:51
have been hurt. Some of us have grown cynical. Some of us have
Track 1 00:04:55
just drifted away. Forgive us for the times we've given up on
Track 1 00:04:59
your body instead of leaning into it. Help us to find our
Track 1 00:05:03
place in messy, grace-filled community. Teach us to encourage
Track 1 00:05:06
one another and be encouraged. Remind us that we need each
Track 1 00:05:10
other, especially now. In Jesus' name, amen. If this podcast has
