When Your First Thought in the Morning Is Dread
Key Takeaways
- Reaching for your phone within ninety seconds of waking up immediately subjects your mind to fear and anxiety before you have a chance to center your thoughts on God.
- Author and Bible teacher Jennie Allen discovered that mental spirals almost always begin with a single thought that can be intercepted and stopped at the very top.
- In Psalm 143:8, David models asking God to hear of His unfailing love each morning while simultaneously dealing with very real fear and external threats.
- Morning dread is largely a sequencing problem; while you may not be able to instantly control your feelings, you can actively decide what gets your first ten minutes.
- Instead of overwhelming yourself with the entire day's burdens, pray for strength for just one hour at a time, trusting God to provide grace when the afternoon arrives.
Within ninety seconds of opening your eyes, your phone has told you what to be afraid of. Learn what David asked God for each morning, and why strength for one hour is the right request.
Some people wake up with a knot in the stomach before their feet hit the floor. Something you were worried about last night is right there waiting on you. Something you have to do today feels too big to start. The list begins running before you're all the way awake. And the first thing most of us do is reach for the phone. So within about ninety seconds of opening your eyes, the day has already told you what to be afraid of.
This episode opens with Jennie Allen, who looked successful from the outside. She was a Bible teacher who spoke to thousands of people about faith, and on the inside her own mind was a crowded, anxious place full of what-ifs she couldn't shut off. She started paying attention to how the spiral worked, and it almost always began the same way, with a single thought. One worry would show up, and if she let it run, it pulled in another and another until her whole mind was underwater.
Psalm 143:8 says, "Let me hear of your unfailing love each morning, for I am trusting you. Show me where to walk, for I give myself to you." Look at what David asks for and when he asks for it. Each morning. He wants a first thing. Of all the voices that could get to him first, he wants it to be God telling him about unfailing love. Then look at the second half. Show me where to walk. That's a request for the next few steps, which is about as far ahead as any of us can see anyway.
Notice what David never claims. He doesn't say the dread was gone. He wrote this while men were hunting him, and a few verses earlier he says his spirit is crushed and his heart is numb with fear. So the man asking to hear about unfailing love in the morning is a man who woke up afraid. Which means part of this is a sequencing problem. The feeling shows up whether you approve of it or not. What you get to decide is what gets the first ten minutes.
So tell God the truth about what you're afraid of today, then ask Him for strength for one hour and only one hour. Most of what you're dreading at six in the morning is about four o'clock this afternoon, and God gives that grace when four o'clock gets here. Bart shares his own version of this, the mornings the week is already on him before his feet hit the floor. Jennie found her leverage at the top of the spiral, where only one thought has shown up so far.
BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING, YOU'LL DISCOVER:
What David asked God for before anything else each morning Why the dread is a sequencing problem as much as a feeling A one-week experiment for the first ten minutes after you wake
For a lot of people, the morning is the top of the spiral. That knot you wake up with is thought number one.

How do you handle feeling overwhelmed by a busy schedule in the morning?
Dr. Bart Leger recommends breaking your day down and asking God for strength for just one hour at a time, since most morning worries involve future events that haven't happened yet.
Jenny Allen looked successful from the outside. She
Bart Leger:was a Bible teacher who spoke to thousands of people about faith

Bart Leger:what-ifs. She just couldn't shut She started paying attention to

Bart Leger:single thought. done anything at all. The truth was, the battle
Bart Leger:came down to the very first thought, long before the spiral
Bart Leger:reached the bottom. We'll come back to what she did with that,
Bart Leger:but first,
Bart Leger:welcome to Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. I'm Bart Leger.
Bart Leger:There are mornings I wake up, and the week's already on me.
Bart Leger:Before my feet hit the floor, I'm running Sunday's message and
Bart Leger:a new speaking opportunity I know are coming. None of it has
Bart Leger:happened yet. It's all still in my head at six in the morning.
Bart Leger:And I know better than that. I've taught on this, and I can
Bart Leger:still lie there and let the whole week run at me before I've
Bart Leger:prayed a word. Some people wake up with a knot in their stomach
Bart Leger:before their feet ever hit the floor. Something you were
Bart Leger:worried about last night is right there waiting on you.
Bart Leger:Something you have to do today feels too big to start, and the
Bart Leger:list begins running before you're all the way awake. And
Bart Leger:the first thing most of us do is reach for the phone, email, or
Bart Leger:whatever came in overnight. So within about 90 seconds of
Bart Leger:opening our eyes, the day has already told you what to fear.
Bart Leger:David wrote something a long time ago about his mornings.
Bart Leger:Psalm 143.8
Bart Leger:Look at what David asks for, and when he asks for it, each
Bart Leger:morning, he wants it first thing. Of all the voices that could get
Bart Leger:to him first, he wants it to be God telling him about unfailing
Bart Leger:love. Then look at the second half. Show me where to walk.
Bart Leger:That's a request for the next few steps, which is about as far
Bart Leger:ahead as any of us can see anyway. And notice what David
Bart Leger:never claims. He doesn't say the dread was gone. He wrote this
Bart Leger:psalm while men were hunting him. Read a few verses earlier, and
Bart Leger:he said his spirit is crushed and his heart is numb with fear.
Bart Leger:So the man asking to hear about unfailing love in the morning is
Bart Leger:a man who woke up afraid. Which means part of this, I believe,
Bart Leger:is a sequencing problem. The feeling shows up whether you
Bart Leger:approve it or not. you get to decide is what gets the first 10
Bart Leger:minutes. So tell God the truth about what you're afraid of
Bart Leger:today. Say whatever's waiting on you in whatever words come out
Bart Leger:of your mouth. Then ask him for the strength for one hour. It
Bart Leger:only needs to be an hour at a time. Most of what you're
Bart Leger:dreading at 6 in the morning is about 4 o'clock in the afternoon,
Bart Leger:and God hasn't handed out 4 o'clock's grace yet. He gives it
Bart Leger:when 4 o'clock gets there. Jenny learned that you don't have to
Bart Leger:follow the first thought down. You can stop it the moment it
Bart Leger:shows up and ask whether it's even true. Then you hand it to
Bart Leger:God and answer it with what He has said. She built her life
Bart Leger:around one line from Paul that we can take every thought
Bart Leger:captive and make it obey Christ. The anxiety won't necessarily
Bart Leger:vanish right away. But she found she had a choice at the top of
Bart Leger:the spiral she never knew she had, and catching that first
Bart Leger:thought was where her freedom started. Look at where she found
Bart Leger:the leverage. At the top. One thought before it had pulled in
Bart Leger:the next five. with 10 things at once, and I guarantee you,
Bart Leger:you'll lose that argument. At the top, there's only one thing,
Bart Leger:and you can ask whether it's even true. And for a lot of
Bart Leger:people, the morning is the top of the spiral. The knot you wake
Bart Leger:up with is number one. Here's today's challenge. Tomorrow
Bart Leger:morning, before you touch your phone, do two things. Tell God
Bart Leger:what you're dreading in whatever words come out. Then pray
Bart Leger:David's line back to him. Let me hear of your unfailing love this
Bart Leger:morning. And give it one week, seven mornings of God getting
Bart Leger:the first slot ahead of the news in the email, and see what the
Bart Leger:second week feels like. Father, you know which of us woke this
Bart Leger:morning with the knot already there. Thank you that David
Bart Leger:wrote this psalm while he was afraid, which tells us you are
Bart Leger:not waiting on us to feel better before we talk to you. For
Bart Leger:everybody listening who dreads the first ten minutes of the day,
Bart Leger:be the first voice they hear tomorrow. Show them where to
Bart Leger:walk and give them the strength for the next hour. In Jesus'
Bart Leger:name, amen.
Bart Leger:to you, would you take a minute and leave a rating and review?
Bart Leger:It helps more people find these devotions, and it only takes a
Bart Leger:moment. I'd be so grateful. Thanks for joining me on Daily
Bart Leger:Devotions for Busy Lives. Remember, you may not get to
Bart Leger:pick the feeling, but you do get to pick what gets the first ten
Bart Leger:minutes. Give God the first slot tomorrow. Come back next time
Bart Leger:for more encouragement to help you live grounded in God's truth.
Bart Leger:Until then, God bless and have a great day.
