Are angels real, or just stories from long ago? In this episode, discover what the Bible teaches about angels and how God still uses His messengers and protectors to remind us we’re never alone.

Do angels really exist?

It’s a question people have asked for centuries, and the Bible gives us a clear answer: yes. Angels are God’s messengers and servants, carrying out His purposes, protecting His people, and pointing us back to His presence.

In today’s devotion, you’ll hear a powerful true story from missionary couple Russell and Gertrude Morse, who experienced God’s unseen protection on the Sino-Tibetan frontier. What they witnessed that night left even their guides speechless—and still reminds believers today that God watches over His people in ways we can’t always explain.

Main Scriptures:

Matthew 28:2–4 – “Suddenly there was a great earthquake! For an angel of the Lord came down from heaven, rolled aside the stone, and sat on it. His face shone like lightning, and his clothing was as white as snow.”

Hebrews 13:2 – “Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it!

By the end of this episode, you’ll discover:

  • What the Bible says about angels and their true purpose
  • How God’s unseen protection is always at work in our lives
  • Why angels point us not to themselves—but to God’s care and power

Today’s Challenge:

Think back to a time when you were protected, helped, or comforted in a way that seemed beyond coincidence.

Thank God for His presence in that moment, and ask Him to open your eyes to the ways He’s working, even when you can’t see it.

00:00:01.550 --> 00:00:07.360
They were days into a rugged trek across the Sino-Tibetan frontier.

00:00:04.160 --> 00:00:41.520
Missionaries Russell and Gertrude Morse traveled by pack animals and sedan chairs, following steep trails and narrow passes through a region known for bandit attacks. One night, they made camp near a spot their guides said was often prowled by thieves. The Morse's slept soundly. Their Tibetan companions did not. At dawn, Gertrude asked, Did you see any robbers? Their guide answered, There certainly were robbers around. Then he hesitated and added, But they didn't come near.

00:00:37.259 --> 00:00:41.520
What kept them away?

00:00:44.706 --> 00:00:53.875
Welcome to Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. I am Bart Leger. And let's be honest, angels can feel pretty mysterious. Are they real?

00:00:54.326 --> 00:00:59.435
Do they still appear today? And if so, what exactly do they do?

00:00:59.915 --> 00:01:28.855
The Bible speaks clearly about angels, created beings who serve God and carry out His will. And sometimes, they show up in surprising ways to remind us that heaven's help is closer than we think. Locals later told the Morse's companions that, Very big and tall figures, Very big and tall figures dressed in white, had been seen standing guard through the night, enough to frighten the bandits away.

00:01:24.676 --> 00:02:49.063
The Morse's believed those figures were angels, God's unseen protection along the trail. Bertrude later wrote about the event in her memoir, The dogs may bark, but the caravan moves on. Describing it as a reminder that the Lord keeps watch over those who are His. Whether God sent angels or unknown watchmen, I think the lesson remains, When God says He'll protect His people, He means it. In Matthew 28, verses 2-4, The Bible tells us, Suddenly, there was a great earthquake. For an angel of the Lord came down from heaven, Rolled aside the stone and sat on it. His face shone like lightning, And His clothing was as white as snow. And Hebrews 13-2 reminds us, Don't forget to show hospitality to strangers, For some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it. Throughout Scripture, angels appear as messengers, warriors, and servants of God. They don't draw attention to themselves. They point people to God's power and presence. Think about it. One angel shut the mouths of lions for Daniel. Another announced Jesus' birth to the shepherds.

00:02:44.943 --> 00:02:53.163
And at the empty tomb, it was an angel who rolled the stone away.

00:02:49.063 --> 00:02:57.804
Not so Jesus could get out, but so witnesses could see in.

00:02:53.163 --> 00:03:05.771
Angels are reminders that heaven is never out of reach. Even when we can't see them, God's care is active and it's personal. And often working behind the scenes.

00:03:06.572 --> 00:03:32.292
Do angels really exist? Do you believe the Bible? I do. And the Bible just takes it for granted that angels are real. And honestly, the Bible is the only reliable place we can go and learn about them. Because outside of those rare moments when they show up in a supernatural way, we really don't have access to them in our everyday lives. But here's something important. Angels don't replace God's presence.

00:03:33.102 --> 00:03:46.262
They reveal it. Their role is to serve His will and protect His people as He directs. So when you feel alone or vulnerable, remember, God may already be working through means you can't even see.

00:03:53.081 --> 00:04:11.671
A just-in-time encounter you still can't quite explain. And thank God for His unseen hand in that moment. Then ask Him to make you more aware of His presence in your everyday life, whether through people, through providence, or yes, even angels.

00:04:12.151 --> 00:04:28.872
Father, thank you for watching over us in ways we can't always see. Thank you for your angels who serve at your command and remind us that you're near. Help us to trust your protection and live with confidence in your care. In Jesus' name, amen.
