The Everyday Power of Gratitude
Thanksgiving isn’t just a holiday. It’s a way of seeing the world. In this episode, discover how the daily practice of gratitude can steady your heart, lift your perspective, and help you recognize God’s goodness in every season.
Ever notice how gratitude can shift the entire atmosphere of your heart?
Not just on Thanksgiving Day, but on any ordinary Thursday?
In this special Thanksgiving episode, Bart shares the story of Judge John Kralik, who, at one of the lowest points in his life, made a simple resolution: write one thank-you note a day for a year. What happened next surprised even him. That daily rhythm of gratitude slowly transformed his outlook, changed relationships, and reframed how he saw God’s goodness in the middle of a hard season.
Through Kralik’s story and the truth of 1 Chronicles 16:34 and Colossians 2:6–7, you’ll discover that gratitude isn’t an emotion; it’s a practice. And when your roots go deep into Christ, thankfulness begins to overflow naturally, even when life is complicated.
Main Scriptures:
1 Chronicles 16:34 (NLT) – “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! His faithful love endures forever.”
Colossians 2:6–7 (NLT) – “Let your roots grow down into him… Then your faith will grow strong… and you will overflow with thankfulness.”
By the end of this episode, you’ll discover:
- Why gratitude is a daily choice, not a once-a-year event
- How thankfulness shifts your focus from what’s missing to what God is doing
- Why noticing small gifts leads to a deeper awareness of God’s presence
- How gratitude anchors you during stressful or uncertain seasons
Today’s Challenge:
Write down five things God has done for you this year, no matter how small.
Then thank Him for each one.
And if you want to take a step further, write a simple thank-you note to someone in your life today. Let gratitude flow outward.

Track 1 00:00:00
He was a Los Angeles judge at the end of a hard year.
Track 1 00:00:04
He was discouraged and distracted, and he was wondering
Track 1 00:00:08
what to do next. On New Year's Day, he made a strangely simple
Track 1 00:00:13
resolution. Write one handwritten thank you note every
Track 1 00:00:17
day for a year. Day after day. Stamps. Envelopes. The whole
Track 1 00:00:23
thing. Could a stack of notes really change everything?
Track 1 00:00:29
Welcome to Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. I'm Bart Leger, and
Track 1 00:00:34
I'm grateful you're joining me on this Thanksgiving day.
Track 1 00:00:38
Today's devotion is all about the everyday power of gratitude.
Track 1 00:00:43
Not just a holiday, but a posture of the heart that God
Track 1 00:00:46
uses to change our attitudes in every season. Thanksgiving comes
Track 1 00:00:50
with food, with family, travel, and sometimes chaos. But
Track 1 00:00:57
underneath all of that is an invitation. An invitation to
Track 1 00:01:01
stop and breathe. And then, remember the goodness of God. 1
Track 1 00:01:05
Chronicles 16.34 says,
Track 1 00:01:11
If nothing else, the faithful love of God toward us gives us
Track 1 00:01:18
every reason to be thankful every day of the year. And for
Track 1 00:01:22
those who know Jesus as their Savior, we have even more reason
Track 1 00:01:26
to be grateful. Colossians 2.6 and 7 tells us, And now, just as
Track 1 00:01:31
you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to
Track 1 00:01:35
follow Him. Let your roots grow down into Him, and let your
Track 1 00:01:40
lives be built on Him. Then, your faith will grow strong in
Track 1 00:01:45
the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with
Track 1 00:01:48
thankfulness. As the months rolled on, Judge John Kralik
Track 1 00:01:53
wrote to anyone and everyone he could think of. Family,
Track 1 00:01:57
coworkers, clients, and even the barista who knew his order. He
Track 1 00:02:02
thanked people for specific kindnesses they had shown to him.
Track 1 00:02:05
He later said that daily practice reframed his outlook
Track 1 00:02:10
and his relationships. His life was in turmoil, but the
Track 1 00:02:15
consistent habit of gratitude he began slowly began to change his
Track 1 00:02:20
attitude. Thank you note by thank you note. He eventually
Track 1 00:02:24
told a story in his memoir, 365 Thank Yous, A Simple Act of
Track 1 00:02:29
Gratitude. The big lesson wasn't a one and done for the year. It
Track 1 00:02:36
was the power of a daily posture of gratitude that encouraged
Track 1 00:02:40
John, and it brightened his whole life. You know, gratitude
Track 1 00:02:44
really does something inside of you. It changes the way you see
Track 1 00:02:49
God, and it will change the way you see people, and the way you
Track 1 00:02:53
approach the ordinary pieces of your day. And it's not because
Track 1 00:02:57
life suddenly becomes easy. No, far from it. The Bible says
Track 1 00:03:01
God's faithful love endures forever. And because of that,
Track 1 00:03:07
gratitude can become a daily rhythm in your life. Colossians
Track 1 00:03:10
says when your roots grow down into Christ, your life will
Track 1 00:03:15
overflow with thankfulness. In other words, gratitude isn't
Track 1 00:03:19
something you force. It's something that grows as you stay
Track 1 00:03:23
close to Jesus. But here's something we often forget.
Track 1 00:03:26
Gratitude isn't natural. It's not natural most of the time,
Track 1 00:03:31
and especially when life is hard. It's something you practice.
Track 1 00:03:35
It's something you choose. And just like John Kralik's daily
Track 1 00:03:39
notes changed his perspective one envelope at a time, daily
Track 1 00:03:43
gratitude will do the same for you. When you deliberately pause
Track 1 00:03:46
and thank God, even for small things, you start to notice His
Track 1 00:03:51
fingerprints in places you used to overlook. Gratitude helps
Track 1 00:03:55
encourage a weary heart, and studies have shown that it
Track 1 00:03:58
lowers stress. It grounds you when life feels overwhelming,
Track 1 00:04:02
and it opens the door to joy you didn't think you had room for.
Track 1 00:04:06
Now, this isn't about pretending everything's perfect, but rather
Track 1 00:04:10
it's about remembering that God's good in every season. He's
Track 1 00:04:13
good on the mountain, He's good on the valley, and even at the
Track 1 00:04:16
messy Thanksgiving table, crowded with foods and kids and
Track 1 00:04:20
noise and all the chaos. Because gratitude is how you stay
Track 1 00:04:23
anchored. It's Thanksgiving. So here's a simple challenge for
Track 1 00:04:27
today. Before the day is over, write down five things God has
Track 1 00:04:31
done for you this year, big or small, and then thank Him for
Track 1 00:04:36
each one. And if you really want to stretch this muscle, try what
Track 1 00:04:41
Judge Kralik did. Write one thank you note. Start with just
Track 1 00:04:45
one, handwritten, and watch what it does inside of you. Then put
Track 1 00:04:49
it in an envelope, put on a stamp, and then mail it. Lord,
Track 1 00:04:54
thank you for your goodness, not just today, but every day. Thank
Track 1 00:04:57
you that your faithful love endures forever. Teach me to
Track 1 00:05:01
notice your gifts and to slow down and to cultivate a heart
Track 1 00:05:05
that overflows with gratitude, even in seasons of change or
Track 1 00:05:10
uncertainty. Help me remember that you are good and you are
Track 1 00:05:13
near. In Jesus' name, Amen. Thanks for joining me today on
Track 1 00:05:19
Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. Remember, gratitude isn't just a
Track 1 00:05:24
holiday. It's a daily choice to be thankful that can brighten
Track 1 00:05:27
your whole life. Come back next time for more encouragement to
Track 1 00:05:31
help you live grounded in God's truth. Until then, God bless and
Track 1 00:05:36
have a great day.
