Learning to Love What God Loves

Learning to Love What God Loves

When your desires pull you one way, and God’s heart pulls you another, which voice wins? In this episode, discover how God shapes your heart so you can love what He loves and walk in His purposes with clarity and courage.

Have you ever chased something you thought would finally satisfy you… only to find it didn’t?

Career ambition, approval, influence, achievement—none of these are bad, but they make terrible substitutes for God.

In this episode, Bart shares the story of Brazilian journalist Franco Iacomini, who once treated journalism “like a religion” until Jesus met him and began reshaping his desires. Franco later trusted Christ as his Savior, and the headlines he cared about most began to change. Today he tells stories of God’s work across Latin America, following a new love—God’s.

Through Franco’s story and the truth of Amos 5:14–15, you’ll see that loving what God loves isn’t something you strive for; it’s something God forms in you as you walk with Him.

Main Scripture:

• Amos 5:14–15 (NLT) – “Do what is good and run from evil so that you may live! Then the Lord God of Heaven’s Armies will be your helper… Hate evil and love what is good.”

By the end of this episode, you’ll discover:

  • Why spiritual transformation begins with transformed desires
  • How God redirects your ambitions, not by force but by love
  • What it looks like to align your heart with God’s heart in everyday life
  • How to recognize when your loves are drifting, and how to return quickly

Today’s Challenge:

Ask God to show you one area of your life where your desires need to be realigned with His.

Then pray: “Lord, help me love what You love.”

Speak:

He started out chasing headlines. He wanted a front-row

Speak:

seat as an eyewitness to Brazil's history. He chased big

Speak:

bylines and even bigger dreams. But somewhere along the way, a

Speak:

deeper question kept nagging at him. What if the story I'm

Speak:

supposed to tell isn't just politics and power, but what God

Speak:

is doing in the That's what journalist Franco Iocamini

Speak:

wrestled with. He later wrote that journalism had become like

Speak:

a religion to him. That is, until Jesus met him and began to

Speak:

reorder his loves. What happens when the scoop you're chasing

Speak:

can't satisfy the hunger in your soul?

Speak:

Welcome to Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. I'm Bart Leger, and

Speak:

for the next few minutes, we're going to look at what it means

Speak:

to let our hearts be shaped by the heart of God. We're talking

Speak:

about learning to love what God loves, not just with our

Speak:

feelings, but with our actions and our decisions. and run from

Speak:

evil so that you may live. Then the Lord God of Heaven's armies

Speak:

will be your helper, just as you have claimed. Hate evil and love

Speak:

what is good? Turn your courts into true halls of justice?

Speak:

Perhaps even yet the Lord God of Heaven's armies will have mercy

Speak:

on the remnant of His people. This is God's heart. Love what's

Speak:

good, turn from what's evil, and live in a way that reflects His

Speak:

character. In his Christianity Today testimony in the November

Speak:

– December 2025 issue, Franco describes a simple, personal

Speak:

moment of surrender that redirected his ambitions.

Speak:

Someone shared with him God's plan of salvation: "Jesus Christ,

Speak:

God in the flesh, came to earth out of love for all mankind,

Speak:

died on the cross to redeem us from our sins, and rose again so

Speak:

that those who put their faith in Him can have eternal life."

Speak:

He eventually trusted Christ as his Savior. He didn't stop

Speak:

caring about news, but as he grew in Christ, he wanted what

Jesus wanted:

to witness God's work and to help others see it.

Jesus wanted:

That shift now shapes his vocation: telling stories of the

Jesus wanted:

church across Latin America and pointing beyond himself to the

Jesus wanted:

one at work in ordinary places and people. As he puts it, he

wanted:

"he wanted to be an eyewitness to Brazil's history.

wanted:

Instead, God made him a witness to his work in the world."

wanted:

Loving what God's love doesn't happen overnight. It happens as

wanted:

Christ reshapes us from the inside out. And the prophet Amos

wanted:

reminds us that this isn't just about what we feel, it's about

wanted:

what we do. When God starts working on your heart, he often

wanted:

begins by showing you where your loves and priorities are out of

wanted:

order. Maybe you've been loving comfort more than obedience.

wanted:

Maybe you've been working to win the approval of others rather

wanted:

than God's. Or maybe your love of self has overshadowed your

wanted:

compassion and love for others. When we're honest about these

wanted:

things, God doesn't shame us just to make us feel bad. He

wanted:

begins to soften our hearts to the things he loves. But loving

wanted:

what God loves also takes practice. It takes time in his

wanted:

word.

wanted:

feels easier. Or choosing truth when a lie would protect your

wanted:

reputation. Choosing mercy when resentment feels justified. Or

wanted:

choosing justice when silence feels safer. Over time, these

wanted:

small choices shape a heart that looks more like Jesus. And

wanted:

here's the good news. You don't do that alone. God is the one

wanted:

who transforms your desires. As you grow in him, the things that

wanted:

used to appeal to you start to lose their grip. And the things

wanted:

that matter to him begin to matter more to you. Here's

wanted:

today's challenge. Ask God to reveal one area where your love

wanted:

needs reordering. Maybe, Maybe, it's a habit, or an attitude, or

wanted:

a relationship, or even a private thought pattern. Then,

wanted:

pray this simple prayer: Lord, help me love what you love today.

wanted:

Let's start there with this simple act of obedience. Lord,

wanted:

thank you that you don't just change our behavior. You change

wanted:

our hearts. Please, shape our desires and help us love what

wanted:

you love and turn away from what pulls us from you. Make our

wanted:

lives a reflection of your goodness and mercy. In Jesus'

wanted:

name, amen. Thanks for joining me today on Daily Devotions for

wanted:

Busy Lives. Remember, God is shaping your heart to love what

wanted:

he loves. Come back next time for more encouragement to help

wanted:

you live grounded in God's truth. Until then, God bless and have a

wanted:

great day.
