Don't Let Hurry Hijack Your Heart

Don't Let Hurry Hijack Your Heart

Hurry can crowd out God’s voice and drain your joy. In this episode, discover how slowing down helps you notice what Jesus is doing right in front of you.

Hurry can crowd out God’s voice and drain your joy. In this episode, discover how slowing down helps you notice what Jesus is doing right in front of you.

Ever feel like life is moving faster than your soul can keep up?

You start the day with good intentions, but before you’ve even prayed, your mind is already racing through tasks, notifications, and responsibilities.

In this episode, Bart shares the story of Samuel D. James, who realized his mornings were ruled by his phone instead of his faith. One simple change, giving Jesus his first attention, reshaped his days. It’s a reminder that hurry doesn’t just make us busy; it makes us spiritually distracted.

Through James’s story and the truth of Luke 10:38–42, you’ll see why slowing down matters. Martha was overwhelmed by details; Mary slowed down long enough to hear Jesus. This episode will help you choose that same posture in the middle of your busy life.

Main Scriptures:

Luke 10:38–42 (NLT) – The story of Martha and Mary, and Jesus’ call to choose “the one thing” that matters most.

Psalm 46:10 (NLT) – “Be still, and know that I am God…”—a reminder that stillness opens the door to presence.

By the end of this episode, you’ll discover:

  • Why hurry and spiritual health rarely go together
  • How small habits can retrain your attention toward Jesus
  • Simple ways to give God your first (and best) moments
  • Why being present with Christ helps you be present with people

Today’s Challenge:

Tomorrow morning, before touching your phone, spend five minutes reading Scripture and five minutes talking with Jesus. Let Him set the pace for your day.

He said his mornings used to start the same way.

Track 1 00:00:04

Alarm, swipe, scroll. Before he'd even prayed, his thumb had

Track 1 00:00:09

already taken a lap through the headlines, emails, and

Track 1 00:00:12

notifications on his phone. Samuel D. James, who writes for

Track 1 00:00:17

Crossway about faith and our phones, finally asked, What if I

Track 1 00:00:21

gave God my first attention instead of my feed? He tried one

Track 1 00:00:27

simple change. Put the phone out of reach and start the day with

Track 1 00:00:31

scripture and prayer. What happens when the first 15

Track 1 00:00:35

minutes belong to Jesus, not the timeline?

Track 1 00:00:41

Welcome to Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. I'm Bart Leger, and

Track 1 00:00:46

today we're talking about something most of us feel every

Track 1 00:00:50

single day. And that is hurry. Not just a busy schedule, but a

Track 1 00:00:55

hurried heart. You know what I mean. Moving from task to task,

Track 1 00:01:00

mind racing, soul buzzing, but not really present to God or the

Track 1 00:01:05

people in front of you. Hurry has a way of hijacking our

Track 1 00:01:09

hearts if we're not careful. And Jesus speaks straight into that

Track 1 00:01:14

tendency. In Luke chapter 10, verses 38 to 42, we have a story

Track 1 00:01:18

about someone who was more concerned with getting things

Track 1 00:01:21

done than spending unhurried time with Jesus. Here it is. As

Track 1 00:01:26

Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to

Track 1 00:01:29

Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman

Track 1 00:01:32

named Martha welcomed him into her home. Her sister Mary sat at

Track 1 00:01:37

the Lord's feet listening to what he taught. But Martha was

Track 1 00:01:41

distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus

Track 1 00:01:45

and said, Lord, doesn't it seem unfair to you that my sister

Track 1 00:01:49

just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and

Track 1 00:01:53

help me. But the Lord said to her, My dear Martha, you are

Track 1 00:01:58

worried and upset over all these details. There is only one thing

Track 1 00:02:04

worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it. And it

Track 1 00:02:08

will not be taken away from her. Jesus wasn't rebuking Martha for

Track 1 00:02:13

working. He was calling out the hurry that had taken over her

Track 1 00:02:17

heart. If we're honest, most of us live like Martha far more

Track 1 00:02:22

than Mary. We start the day reacting. Notifications, news,

Track 1 00:02:27

messages, and tasks. It's easy to wake up with a full schedule

Track 1 00:02:31

but an empty soul. And that's exactly where Martha was. Busy

Track 1 00:02:36

for Jesus, but not actually with Jesus. Let's go back to the

Track 1 00:02:41

story about Samuel James. He tried one simple change. The

Track 1 00:02:46

phone out of reach and the first minutes of the day belonging to

Track 1 00:02:50

Jesus. Here's what he now counsels people to do. Make it

Track 1 00:02:54

small and doable. He says, read for five, pray for ten. If the

Track 1 00:02:59

phone pulls you back, cut the cord for a bit. Turn it off. Put

Track 1 00:03:03

it in another room. Try a weekly tech Sabbath and let your soul

Track 1 00:03:08

breathe. He says those habits begin to retrain your attention

Track 1 00:03:13

toward Christ and help you actually show up for real people

Track 1 00:03:17

in real community. It's not about being anti-technology.

Track 1 00:03:21

It's about being pro-presence. Start with the word, talk to the

Track 1 00:03:26

Lord, and let everything else take a number. That's the

Track 1 00:03:31

difference between Martha and Mary. Martha's activity wasn't

Track 1 00:03:34

the problem. It was her divided attention. Mary wasn't lazy. She

Track 1 00:03:40

was simply focused on Jesus. And sometimes the most spiritual

Track 1 00:03:44

thing you can do is slow down long enough to hear Jesus speak

Track 1 00:03:48

your name. The truth is, hurry doesn't just make you tired. It

Track 1 00:03:53

makes you spiritually dull. It crowds out prayer. It dulls your

Track 1 00:03:57

awareness of God's presence. And it steals the margin needed to

Track 1 00:04:01

love people well. Jesus invites us to step off the treadmill and

Track 1 00:04:06

sit at his feet, to choose the one thing that matters most.

Track 1 00:04:11

What if your day began with Jesus instead of your inbox?

Track 1 00:04:16

What if you got your heart settled before your schedule

Track 1 00:04:19

takes over? Little practices can reorient an entire life. Here's

Track 1 00:04:24

today's challenge. Tomorrow morning, before you touch your

Track 1 00:04:28

phone, spend just five minutes reading scripture and five

Track 1 00:04:32

minutes talking to Jesus. No pressure. No checklist. Just

Track 1 00:04:37

presence. And if hurry keeps creeping back in, ask the Lord

Track 1 00:04:41

to slow your heart so you can hear his voice. Lord, so often I

Track 1 00:04:47

let hurry run my life. I rush past you, past people, and past

Track 1 00:04:52

the moments you've set in front of me. Help me slow down and

Track 1 00:04:56

choose the one thing that matters, to sit with you, to

Track 1 00:05:00

listen, and to live at your pace. Give me a calm, attentive heart.

Track 1 00:05:05

In Jesus' name, amen. Thanks for joining me today on Daily

Track 1 00:05:09

Devotions for Busy Lives. Remember, don't let hurry hijack

Track 1 00:05:14

your heart. Choose what matters most. Come back next time for

Track 1 00:05:18

more encouragement to help you live grounded in God's truth.

Track 1 00:05:22

Until then, God bless and have a great day.
