Feel like an outsider in a place that's supposed to feel like home? In this episode, discover why God placed you in the body of Christ on purpose, and why the church isn't complete without the parts that feel like they don't fit.

Have you ever walked into church and felt like everyone else belonged except you?

Maybe you're single in a couples-focused church. Maybe you're divorced and don't fit the family ministry mold. Maybe you're new, introverted, from a different background, or just a little different from everyone around you. Whatever the reason, the very place that preaches belonging can sometimes feel like the loneliest room you walk into. And that pain cuts deeper than feeling like an outsider anywhere else, because church is supposed to be home.

In this episode, we look at the story of Lisa Harper, who has been honest about what it's like to be a single woman in a church world built around couples and families. Family Sundays, couples' retreats, and Mother's Day sermons reminded her that her life didn't match what the church brochure seemed to expect. She loved Jesus and His people, but sometimes she felt invisible in her own faith community. Instead of walking away, she stayed and eventually became a powerful voice for making room for every kind of person in the body of Christ.

Through her story and 1 Corinthians 12:18–20, you'll see that God designed the body of Christ for diversity, not uniformity. He put each part just where He wants it. That includes you, especially when you feel like you don't fit.

BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING, YOU'LL DISCOVER:

  1. Why feeling like an outsider at church is more common than most people admit
  2. How 1 Corinthians 12 reveals that the body of Christ isn't complete without the parts that feel like they don't belong
  3. Practical steps for leaning in when you feel invisible, and for welcoming those who might be sitting alone

You're not an accident in the body. God placed you there on purpose, and the church isn't complete without you.

Track 1 00:00:01

She sits alone in a church pew surrounded by married

Track 1 00:00:04

couples and young families, and she feels invisible. Lisa Harper

Track 1 00:00:09

has been honest about what it's like to be a single woman in a

Track 1 00:00:12

church world built around couples and families. Those

Track 1 00:00:15

around her share milestones she's never experienced. Family

Track 1 00:00:18

Sundays and couples' retreats remind her of her singleness,

Track 1 00:00:22

and Mother's Day sermons remind her that her life doesn't look

Track 1 00:00:25

like what the church brochure seems to expect. She loves Jesus

Track 1 00:00:29

and His people, but sometimes the very place that preaches

Track 1 00:00:33

belonging feels like the loneliest room she walks into.

Track 1 00:00:37

Is she the only one who's ever experienced I don't think so.

Track 1 00:00:44

Welcome to Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. I'm Bart Leger, and

Track 1 00:00:48

if there's any place that should be warm and welcoming, it would

Track 1 00:00:52

be the church, right? Well, at least it should be.

Track 1 00:00:55

Unfortunately, that's not everyone's experience. Church is

Track 1 00:00:59

supposed to feel like family, but to many, sometimes it feels

Track 1 00:01:03

more like a club you weren't invited to. Maybe you're new or

Track 1 00:01:07

just a bit different. Maybe you've been hurt by someone

Track 1 00:01:10

there. belonging is somehow even more painful. But that's not how

Track 1 00:01:19

it should be. The body of Christ was designed to include every

Track 1 00:01:22

part, especially those who feel like they don't belong. 1

Track 1 00:01:26

Corinthians 12, 18-20 says,

Track 1 00:01:34

How strange a body would be if it had only one part. Yes, there

Track 1 00:01:39

are many parts, but only one body. God put each part where he

Track 1 00:01:45

wants it. And if you've trusted Christ as your Savior and belong

Track 1 00:01:48

to the body of Christ, that includes you. Maybe you walk

Track 1 00:01:52

into church and feel like everyone else got the memo you

Track 1 00:01:55

didn't. They seem to know each other in ways you don't. They

Track 1 00:01:59

share an insider language and a lifestyle that you don't. And

Track 1 00:02:03

you stand there thinking, maybe I don't belong here. That

Track 1 00:02:07

feeling is more common than you might imagine. It's not just the

Track 1 00:02:10

new person who feels it. It's the single person in a

Track 1 00:02:12

couples-focused church. It's the divorced person who doesn't fit

Track 1 00:02:16

the family ministry mold. It's the person with a disability who

Track 1 00:02:19

can't access certain programs. Or, as in many older buildings,

Track 1 00:02:24

the bathrooms. It's the introvert who struggles with the

Track 1 00:02:27

greeting time. Or the person from a different background,

Track 1 00:02:31

ethnicity or socioeconomic situation, who looks around and

Track 1 00:02:35

doesn't see anyone who looks like them. pain of feeling like

Track 1 00:02:38

an outsider in a place that's supposed to welcome everyone can

Track 1 00:02:42

be far worse than feeling like an outsider anywhere else.

Track 1 00:02:45

Because church is supposed to be home. But here's what Scripture

Track 1 00:02:49

tells The body of Christ isn't designed for uniformity. It's

Track 1 00:02:53

designed for diversity. Paul's whole point in 1 Corinthians 12

Track 1 00:02:57

is that the body needs every kind of part. The eye can't say

Track 1 00:03:01

to the hand, I don't need you. The head can't say to the feet,

Track 1 00:03:04

I don't need you. In fact, Paul says the parts that seem weakest

Track 1 00:03:08

or least important are actually indispensable. That means your

Track 1 00:03:13

presence in the body matters, especially when you feel like

Track 1 00:03:16

you don't fit. God didn't place you there by accident. He put

Track 1 00:03:20

you just where He wants you. Not because you match everyone else,

Track 1 00:03:24

but because the body isn't complete without you. Now, that

Track 1 00:03:28

doesn't excuse churches that are cliquish or unwelcoming.

Track 1 00:03:32

Churches should be working hard to make room for every kind of

Track 1 00:03:35

person, whether they're single or married, divorced, widowed,

Track 1 00:03:39

young, old, every background, and every story. And if your

Track 1 00:03:44

church isn't doing that, it's worth having an honest

Track 1 00:03:47

conversation about it. But even in imperfect churches, and by

Track 1 00:03:50

the way, they're all imperfect, you can hold on to this truth.

Track 1 00:03:54

God has placed you where you are, even if just for a season, and

Track 1 00:03:59

the body needs you. Instead of walking away, she stayed. Lisa,

Track 1 00:04:04

former director of women's outreach at Focus on the Family,

Track 1 00:04:07

eventually adopted a daughter from Haiti as a single mom. She

Track 1 00:04:11

now writes and speaks about the importance of churches making

Track 1 00:04:14

room for every kind of person. As I said, whether you're single,

Track 1 00:04:18

divorced, widowed, or otherwise outside the expected profile,

Track 1 00:04:23

she teaches that the body of Christ needs every part, not

Track 1 00:04:26

just the ones that match the bulletin cover. If you've ever

Track 1 00:04:29

felt like an outsider in your own faith community, I want you

Track 1 00:04:33

to hear this. You're not an accident in the body. God placed

Track 1 00:04:37

you there on purpose. The church isn't complete without the parts

Track 1 00:04:40

that feel like they don't fit. Maybe you've been sitting in the

Track 1 00:04:43

back row feeling invisible, or you stopped going altogether

Track 1 00:04:46

because the loneliness was just too much. You love Jesus, but

Track 1 00:04:50

you're not sure his people have room for someone like you.

Track 1 00:04:54

Whether they realize it or not, they do. And even when it

Track 1 00:04:57

doesn't feel like it, God has placed you in the body for a

Track 1 00:05:00

reason. You bring something no one else can bring. Your story,

Track 1 00:05:04

your perspective, and most importantly, your spiritual gift.

Track 1 00:05:08

Here's today's challenge. If you've been feeling like an

Track 1 00:05:11

outsider at church, do one thing this week to lean in instead of

Track 1 00:05:15

pulling away. It might be showing up to a small group, or

Track 1 00:05:18

it might be introducing yourself to one person you don't know. It

Track 1 00:05:22

might be telling a pastor or a leader, I've been feeling

Track 1 00:05:26

disconnected, and I want to find my place. And if you're someone

Track 1 00:05:30

who does feel at home in your church, look around this Sunday.

Track 1 00:05:33

Is there someone sitting alone? Maybe someone you or who looks

Track 1 00:05:37

like they don't quite fit in? I want you to be that person who

Track 1 00:05:40

walks over and says, I'm glad you're here. Lord, some of us

Track 1 00:05:45

feel invisible in the very place that's supposed to feel like

Track 1 00:05:47

home. The loneliness of not fitting in at church is real for

Track 1 00:05:52

so many people, and it hurts. Remind us today that you placed

Track 1 00:05:56

us in the body on purpose, and we're not accidents. The church

Track 1 00:06:00

needs every part, even the ones that feel like they don't belong.

Track 1 00:06:03

Help us to lean in, and help our churches to make room for

Track 1 00:06:07

everyone. In Jesus' name, amen. If this episode encouraged you,

Track 1 00:06:12

would you share it with someone who might be feeling like an

Track 1 00:06:15

outsider at church? Just send them the link from the show

Track 1 00:06:17

notes. They may need this reminder that they belong in the

Track 1 00:06:20

body of Christ. Thanks for joining me on Daily Devotions

Track 1 00:06:23

for Busy Lives. Remember, the body of Christ needs every part,

Track 1 00:06:27

especially those who don't feel like they fit in. God placed you

Track 1 00:06:31

there on purpose, and the church isn't complete without you. Come

Track 1 00:06:35

back next time for more encouragement to help you live

Track 1 00:06:37

grounded in God's truth. Until then, God bless, and have a

Track 1 00:06:42

great day.
