When the Calling You Thought You Had Hasn't Come

Do you remember a time when a clear sense of calling was placed upon your heart, perhaps at a young age, only for it to not materialize in the way you expected, even decades later? This episode of Daily Devotions for Busy Lives explores the profound truth that the years of waiting are often not a delay, but the very process through which God shapes the calling within you, preparing you for what He has promised. Join Dr. Bart Leger as he delves into the experiences of those who have navigated this journey of patient anticipation.

Many of us have vivid memories of a divine nudge, a prophetic word from a mentor, or an undeniable inner stirring that pointed towards a specific life's work. We embraced this vision, yet as years turned into decades, the expected doors remained shut, the anticipated gifts lay dormant, and the envisioned path seemed to disappear. This often leads to questioning whether we misheard God or if the calling was intended for someone else entirely.

The Four-Decade Wait: Jenita Matteson's Story

Jenita Matteson's journey is a powerful testament to enduring faith. As a young woman, she received a clear vision: a property dedicated to discipleship and discovering God's unique purpose for individuals. For forty years, Jenita diligently pursued this vision, facing countless attempts that, while teaching valuable lessons, didn't directly advance the dream. The loss of her husband in 2007 might have seemed like the final signal to abandon the dream. She was older, alone, and the financial resources for the envisioned facility had never materialized.

Lessons from Joseph's Wait

The biblical account of Joseph offers profound insight into these extended periods of waiting. At seventeen, Joseph received a dream from God, yet thirteen years elapsed before its fulfillment, years marked by betrayal and imprisonment. Reflecting on his life, Joseph declared to the brothers who wronged him, "You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good." This powerful statement highlights God's sovereign hand, orchestrating good through every circumstance. Those seemingly stagnant years were not a passive holding pattern; they were the crucible in which Joseph was forged into the man capable of fulfilling the divine vision. From within the trial, this is nearly impossible to see, but God was not disregarding the calling within Joseph; He was actively cultivating the character and resilience necessary to steward it upon its arrival.

God's Unseen Work in the Waiting

The patience and deep dependence on God developed during these waiting seasons are precisely what the younger self lacked. It is in these quiet, often challenging, years that God builds the essential qualities needed to carry His promises. In 2018, Jenita received an unexpected, substantial financial gift, finally providing the foundation for her forty-year-old vision. She launched Gold Standard Ministries. When the global pandemic hit in 2020, the unexpected pause allowed her to refine the curriculum and pivot to an online model, reaching people worldwide—an evolution she could never have conceived in 1978. This mirrors the wisdom behind God keeping Moses in the wilderness for forty years; the extended season was God's method of preparing Moses for the monumental task ahead.

A Redeemed Calling: Dr. Bart Leger's Experience

In this episode, Dr. Bart Leger also shares his personal story of a redirected calling. As a music major, he felt an unexpected pull toward ministry, a path that initially seemed to diverge from his perceived destiny. He discusses the internal struggle and the trust required to believe that God hadn't abandoned His plan but was, in fact, refining it.

If you find yourself discouraged by a calling that feels perpetually out of reach, this message is a powerful encouragement to persevere. The years between receiving a divine promise and its tangible fulfillment are not empty. Instead, they are the essential, foundational years where God is meticulously building you, equipping you for the very purpose He has called you to. Your season of waiting is a season of divine preparation.

Key Takeaways

  • The gap between sensing a divine calling and its fulfillment is rarely wasted time; it is a period of crucial character development and preparation.
  • The story of Joseph illustrates how God uses even betrayal and hardship to build the necessary character and resilience for a future promise.
  • Actively look for and acknowledge what God has been building within you during your waiting periods – patience, dependence, and specific skills.
  • God's plan is not to abandon your calling but to grow you into the person He needs you to be to carry it out effectively.

Summary: This episode addresses the common experience of a calling that seems delayed or has not manifested as expected. Drawing on biblical examples like Joseph and personal testimonies, including that of Jenita Matteson and Dr. Bart Leger, the podcast emphasizes that waiting periods are not inactive delays but active periods of God-led formation. The years of waiting are crucial for building character, patience, and dependence on God, shaping individuals to be ready for the promises He has ordained. The core message is that God is actively preparing you during the wait, ensuring you are equipped for the calling when it fully unfolds.

Bart Leger:

Janita Matson was a young woman when God gave her a

Bart Leger:

clear picture of what she was supposed to build. It was

Bart Leger:

detailed, a property, a place where people would come for a

Bart Leger:

season of training to be discipled, to discover who they

Bart Leger:

were in God's eyes and what He had called them to do. She could

Bart Leger:

see it and believed it, and then she spent the next 40 years

Bart Leger:

trying to make it happen, only to find she couldn't. She tried

Bart Leger:

in many ways and many times, she said. Each attempt taught her

Bart Leger:

something. None of them moved the vision forward. She

Bart Leger:

described the process the way Moses might have described the

Bart Leger:

wilderness. There was so much she needed to learn and so much

Bart Leger:

that needed to change in her before God could give her what

Bart Leger:

He had promised. Then, in 2007, her husband died. If there was

Bart Leger:

any moment when the vision could have reasonably been declared

Bart Leger:

finished, that was it. She was older now, and she was alone.

Bart Leger:

The money needed for a facility had never come, and she couldn't

Bart Leger:

see how it would. those years because she didn't know what

Bart Leger:

else to do with what God had put in her, but she struggled to

Bart Leger:

believe the vision was still alive. We'll come back to what

Bart Leger:

happened in 2018. But

Bart Leger:

first, welcome to Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. I'm

Bart Leger:

Bart Leger. If you were once sure God had something specific

Bart Leger:

for your life, and it still hasn't come the way you pictured,

Bart Leger:

then this one's for you. I'll tell you where I felt this. I

Bart Leger:

went to college as a music major. That was the plan, or at least

Bart Leger:

that was my plan B, and I had a clear picture of where it would

Bart Leger:

take me. Then, I started sensing a pull toward being a pastor,

Bart Leger:

which made no sense to me at the time. I'm an introvert. Standing

Bart Leger:

in front of people, speaking week after week, was the last

Bart Leger:

thing I'd have chosen for myself. The calling that came looked

Bart Leger:

nothing like the one I had drawn up at 18. It took me years to

Bart Leger:

see that God hadn't scrapped my plan. He was building something

Bart Leger:

I couldn't have built on my own. Many of us had a sense of

Bart Leger:

calling when we were young. Maybe someone looked at you and

Bart Leger:

said they saw something in you. Maybe you felt a stirring you

Bart Leger:

couldn't shake, and you believed it, and now, years later, the

Bart Leger:

thing hasn't taken the shape you expected. The door never opened,

Bart Leger:

or the gift never got used the way you imagined. And you

Bart Leger:

started to wonder if you misheard God, or if it was meant

Bart Leger:

for someone else. Joseph knew that ache. He was just 17 years

Bart Leger:

old when God gave him a dream that his family would one day

Bart Leger:

bow to him. Then his brother sold him into slavery, and he

Bart Leger:

spent years falsely accused and forgotten in a prison cell. By

Bart Leger:

the time the dream came true, 13 years had passed. Years that

Bart Leger:

looked more like the dream dying than coming true. Here's what he

Bart Leger:

said at the end, looking back on it all in Genesis 50, 20. You

Bart Leger:

intended to harm me. Told that to his brothers. But God

Bart Leger:

intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I

Bart Leger:

could save the lives of many people. Look at the word Joseph

Bart Leger:

uses, intended. God intended it for good and was working good

Bart Leger:

through every piece of it. The betrayal and the long years in

Bart Leger:

prison included. Here's the part you can't see from the inside

Bart Leger:

while you're waiting. Those years were the calling itself

Bart Leger:

taking shape. God was preparing the position for Joseph, and at

Bart Leger:

the same time preparing Joseph for it. The dreamy 17-year-old

Bart Leger:

couldn't have accomplished what the older, tested man eventually

Bart Leger:

could. The weight built the man the vision required. The same

Bart Leger:

thing is happening in yours. God isn't ignoring the calling he

Bart Leger:

put in you. He's growing you into the person who can hold it

Bart Leger:

when it arrives. The patience and the dependence on him that

Bart Leger:

the younger you didn't have yet. That's what these years have

Bart Leger:

been forming. In 2018, Janita Mattson received a large and

Bart Leger:

entirely unexpected financial gift. She hadn't sought it out.

Bart Leger:

It was totally unexpected. And the vision she attended for 40

Bart Leger:

years suddenly had the ground it needed to stand on. She launched

Bart Leger:

Gold Standard Ministries. Then COVID arrived, and the shutdown

Bart Leger:

that closed everything else freed up her time to write the

Bart Leger:

full course curriculum she had been working toward. She also

Bart Leger:

realized the training could reach people globally through

Bart Leger:

online delivery, something she never could have planned or

Bart Leger:

would have planned for in 1978. She said it this way, I can now

Bart Leger:

understand why he kept Moses in the wilderness for 40 years.

Bart Leger:

There were so many things I needed to know and understand,

Bart Leger:

and so much shaping and growth that needed to happen in me,

Bart Leger:

from the initial vision to the manifestation of it. The vision

Bart Leger:

that took 40 years because God was building Janita for the

Bart Leger:

vision, not just the vision for Janita. That's the part you

Bart Leger:

don't see from the inside when you're in the middle of it.

Bart Leger:

Here's today's challenge. If there's a calling you've been

Bart Leger:

grieving as take a few minutes today and write down what God

Bart Leger:

has built in you during the wait. The patience you didn't have

Bart Leger:

before. The faith that was forged when nothing was moving

Bart Leger:

forward. Then, ask him, what is he forming in you right now that

Bart Leger:

the original dream couldn't have built? You may find the wait has

Bart Leger:

been doing more than you thought. Father, thank you that no part

Bart Leger:

of our waiting is wasted with you. For the one who's wondered

Bart Leger:

if they misheard you or if the calling was meant for someone

Bart Leger:

else, settle their heart today. Remind them that you are

Bart Leger:

building them for what you promised, even when nothing

Bart Leger:

seems to move. Give us the patience of Joseph, who trusted

Bart Leger:

that you meant for good what looked like loss. In Jesus' name,

Bart Leger:

amen. If Daily Devotions for Busy Lives has been an

Bart Leger:

encouragement to you, would you take a minute and leave a rating

Bart Leger:

and review? It helps more people find these devotions, and it

Bart Leger:

only takes a moment. I'd be so grateful. Thanks for joining me

Bart Leger:

on Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. Remember, the years

Bart Leger:

between the promise and its fulfillment aren't empty. God is

Bart Leger:

building you for the very thing you've been waiting for. Come

Bart Leger:

back next time for more encouragement to help you live

Bart Leger:

grounded in God's truth. Until then, God bless and have a great

Bart Leger:

day.
