When Worry Won’t Turn Off at Night

When Worry Won’t Turn Off at Night

Nighttime worries won’t turn off? Learn how honest prayer and gratitude can turn anxious spirals into God’s peace that guards your heart and mind.

Nighttime worries won’t turn off? Learn how honest prayer and gratitude can turn anxious spirals into God’s peace that guards your heart and mind.

Ever had a night where your body is tired, but your mind refuses to shut off?

You lie in bed replaying conversations…

Running through worst-case scenarios…

Thinking about bills, work, kids, health, and a future that feels uncertain…

And the harder you try to stop worrying, the more your thoughts spiral.

In this episode, Bart shares the story of a young woman whose anxiety exploded at night just as she was stepping into a new season of life. On the outside, everything looked exciting. On the inside, she was unraveling. One night, at the end of herself, she slipped out of bed, dropped to her knees, and prayed one honest sentence: “God… I can’t carry this anymore.” That simple surrender became a turning point where God began to meet her with real peace.

Through her story and the truth of Philippians 4:6–7, you’ll see that God doesn’t just tell you not to worry, He gives you a way to bring your worry to Him. You’ll learn how turning anxious spirals into specific prayers, and pairing them with gratitude, can open the door to a peace that “guards your heart and mind” even when nothing around you has changed.

Main Scripture:

Philippians 4:6–7 (NLT) –

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”

By the end of this episode, you’ll discover:

  • Why your mind tends to race most at night—and what to do with those thoughts
  • How to turn worry into honest, simple conversation with God
  • The role of gratitude in shifting your perspective and remembering God’s faithfulness
  • A practical nighttime rhythm to invite God’s peace to guard your heart and mind

Today’s Challenge:

Tonight, when you lie down and your thoughts start to spiral:

  • Pray honestly. Tell God exactly what’s on your mind—your fears about the future, your work, your family.
  • Tell Him what you need. Ask specifically for His help, wisdom, provision, and peace.
  • Thank Him for at least three things. Remember ways He has been faithful and present in your life.
  • Instead of letting your mind run in circles, let those moments become a doorway to God’s presence and peace.

Track 1 00:00:01

A few years ago, a young woman named Kristen was

Track 1 00:00:03

getting ready to start college, and on paper, everything looked

Track 1 00:00:07

exciting, a whole new chapter of life. But inside, she was

Track 1 00:00:11

falling apart. At night, when everything got quiet, her mind

Track 1 00:00:15

would turn into a runaway train. She said her anxiety would crank

Track 1 00:00:19

up the moment she tried to go to sleep. Her heart would race, and

Track 1 00:00:22

her thoughts would spiral. And before long, she was convinced

Track 1 00:00:26

she was losing control of her life before it even began. Then,

Track 1 00:00:30

one night, exhausted and out of answers, she reached a breaking

Track 1 00:00:34

point. She got out of bed, dropped to her knees on the

Track 1 00:00:37

floor, and whispered a prayer that was as honest as it gets.

Track 1 00:00:41

God, I can't carry this anymore. She didn't try to impress God.

Track 1 00:00:47

She was just honest with Him. And something happened that she

Track 1 00:00:51

didn't expect.

Track 1 00:00:55

Welcome to Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. I'm Bart Leger, and

Track 1 00:01:00

today we're talking about those nights when you climb into bed

Track 1 00:01:03

physically tired, but your mind refuses to shut off. Your

Track 1 00:01:07

thoughts start racing about the future, your job, your family,

Track 1 00:01:11

your finances. And the more you try not to worry, the bigger

Track 1 00:01:15

your worries seem to get. If you've ever stared at the

Track 1 00:01:18

ceiling at 2 a. m., replayed fears and what-ifs, then this

Track 1 00:01:22

episode is for you. Philippians 4, 6, and 7 says,

Track 1 00:01:34

Most of us don't choose anxiety on purpose. It kind of sneaks up

Track 1 00:01:49

on us. Paul doesn't want to be, LAUGHTER, A passing thought

Track 1 00:01:50

about tomorrow's meeting turns into a five-minute scenario in

Track 1 00:01:53

your head. A concern about one of your kids becomes a movie of

Track 1 00:01:58

worst-case scenarios. A bill reminds you of money, and

Track 1 00:02:02

suddenly, you're living six months in the future, imagining

Track 1 00:02:05

everything that could go wrong. Paul doesn't pretend those

Track 1 00:02:09

concerns aren't real, and he doesn't say, just stop thinking

Track 1 00:02:12

about it. Instead, he gives us a different path. He says, don't

Track 1 00:02:16

worry about anything. Instead, pray about everything. Take the

Track 1 00:02:21

very thing you're obsessing over and turn it into a conversation

Track 1 00:02:25

with God. Then, tell God what you need, and be specific. Maybe

Track 1 00:02:31

it's wisdom for a decision, or provision for a bill, or peace

Track 1 00:02:36

for your heart, or protection over your family. And then,

Track 1 00:02:40

finally, thank Him for all He has done. Gratitude doesn't

Track 1 00:02:45

erase the problem, but it reframes your perspective. It

Track 1 00:02:48

reminds your anxious heart that God has been faithful before,

Track 1 00:02:51

and He hasn't changed.

Track 1 00:03:01

That word, guard, is a military term. It's like God stationing

Track 1 00:03:09

His peace around your heart and mind, especially in the moments

Track 1 00:03:13

where worry usually rushes in. Then, the circumstances might

Track 1 00:03:16

not instantly change, but something inside you can. We

Track 1 00:03:22

notice the order. We pray, we're honest, we thank Him, then we

Track 1 00:03:27

experience His peace.

Track 1 00:03:31

It's an invitation to bring our whole anxious selves to Him, and

Track 1 00:03:36

then let Him meet us there. This is where Kristen's story comes

Track 1 00:03:40

back in. Kristen later said that the moment she prayed that

Track 1 00:03:44

desperate prayer, she felt something shift inside her. The

Track 1 00:03:48

heavens didn't open, and the angels didn't sing, but it was

Track 1 00:03:52

peace, real peace. The kind that Philippians 4 talks about, the

Track 1 00:03:56

peace that guards your heart and mind. She said God took away her

Track 1 00:04:01

insomnia, and her anxiety was not as intense. Little by little,

Track 1 00:04:05

she stopped spiraling. That one moment of surrender became the

Track 1 00:04:10

turning point. It didn't erase all the stress of college or

Track 1 00:04:14

life, but it broke the cycle, and it taught her that honest

Track 1 00:04:18

prayer and gratitude are sometimes the doorways to the

Track 1 00:04:21

very peace we're begging for. Maybe you can relate. Your

Track 1 00:04:25

worries might not be about starting college, but they might

Track 1 00:04:27

be about a job that feels unstable, or a child who's

Track 1 00:04:31

struggling. Maybe it's aging parents and their health, or

Track 1 00:04:35

bills that don't seem to match your income. the first worried

Track 1 00:04:40

thought from popping into your head, but you can choose what

Track 1 00:04:43

you do next. Philippians 4 invites you to do what Kristen

Track 1 00:04:47

did on that bedroom floor. Turn your anxiety into honest, simple

Track 1 00:04:51

prayer, and anchor it with gratitude. Here's today's

Track 1 00:04:55

challenge. Tonight, when you lie down and your mind starts to

Track 1 00:04:58

race, don't battle your thoughts alone. Instead, pray honestly.

Track 1 00:05:03

Whisper, Lord, I can't carry this. And then, tell them

Track 1 00:05:07

exactly what's on your mind. It could be about your future, your

Track 1 00:05:11

work, your family, really anything, whatever it is. And

Track 1 00:05:14

then, second, tell God what you need. Ask specifically for His

Track 1 00:05:18

help, His wisdom, or His provision, or His peace. And

Track 1 00:05:21

then, thirdly, thank Him for at least three things. They can be

Track 1 00:05:25

small. It could be a person you love, a way He's provided for

Track 1 00:05:29

you in the past, or simply that He's with you in this very

Track 1 00:05:33

moment. Do that instead of just replaying every what if. Let

Track 1 00:05:38

those worried minutes become a doorway to God's presence, not

Track 1 00:05:42

just a tunnel of fear. Lord, You see every late night fear and

Track 1 00:05:46

every hidden anxiety about our future. You know how our minds

Track 1 00:05:50

can spiral when the lights go out and the house gets quiet.

Track 1 00:06:02

Father, teach us to create our anxious thoughts for honest

Track 1 00:06:07

prayer and real gratitude. Tonight, guard our hearts and

Track 1 00:06:10

minds with Your peace. Help us to rest, not because every

Track 1 00:06:14

problem is solved, but because we're held by You. In Jesus'

Track 1 00:06:18

name, Amen. If today's episode has encouraged you, chances are

Track 1 00:06:24

it might just help someone you care about too. So, maybe share

Track 1 00:06:28

it with a friend or a loved one. Just copy the link in the show

Track 1 00:06:31

notes and send it their way. You never know how much they might

Track 1 00:06:34

Track 1 00:06:37

does really mean the world to me. Thanks for joining me today on

Track 1 00:06:42

Daily Devotions for Busy Lives. Remember, when worry won't turn

Track 1 00:06:46

off at night, you don't have to face it alone. God is inviting

Track 1 00:06:50

you to trade anxious spirals for His peace. Come back next time

Track 1 00:06:54

for more encouragement to help you live grounded in God's truth.

Track 1 00:06:58

Until then, God bless and have a great day.
